    • The connection cables for the battery and solar modules are not strain-relieved During mounting, adequate strain relief must be applied.

    Electrical Installation

    • The installation may only be carried out by a professionally qualified person.
    • All valid local regulations for electrical installations must be observed during installation.
    • If components other than those enclosed are used, they must be approved for this application and for use on ships.
    • Observe the solar module manufacturer’s installation instructions.
    • Only ONE charge controller may be connected to a solar module at a time.
    • When using several solar modules in series or parallel connection to a solar charge controller, it is essential to comply with the manufacturer’s specifications regarding the module parameters and the installation of bypass or blocking diodes.

    Solar module connection

Solar modules must comply with the requirements mentioned in 2. To connect the solar module, repeat the following steps for the plus and minus connection:

torqeedo, 2218-00, solar, charge, controller, power
    • Guide the enclosed heat-shrink tubing over one of the cables to be connected.
    • Strip 6 mm (1/4″) of insulation from the connection cable of the solar module and the charge controller.
    • Insert the stripped cable ends evenly into the crimp connector until they touch. Make sure that the positive cables of the module and the charge controller and the negative cables of the module and the charge controller are connected to each other.
    • Crimp the joint connector along its entire length using suitable crimping pliers. Make sure that the cable ends do not slip inside the crimp connector.
    • Slide the heat-shrink tubing fully and symmetrically over the crimp connector. Then heat the heat-shrink tubing to a temperature of 120°C.

The LED on the charge controller may flash red until it is fully connected to the Torqeedo system.

    • Heat-shrink tubing
    • Wire strippers
    • Crimp connector
    • Crimping pliers
    • Heat gun

The battery cable must NOT be extended.

    Connecting the battery

Switch off the system before installation (status LED on the battery housing and remote throttle display are off). Then screw the black M10 ring cable lug to the battery negative terminal and the red M8 ring cable lug to the battery positive terminal. Make sure that no electrical components are connected directly to the charge controller. These should only be connected directly to the Power 48-5000.

In a system with two Power 48-5000 batteries, the charge controller should be connected diagonally. In other words, connect the negative cable to one battery and the positive cable to the other battery.

    Connecting the TorqLink cabling

Connect the enclosed TorqLink T-cable to the solar charger as shown in the following illustration and connect it to the TorqLink Backbone. The charge controller must be connected to the TorqLink network for proper functioning.

A maximum of 6 charge controllers may be operated in parallel.

    Operation

The solar charge controller can switch the Power 48-5000 battery on and off automatically when there is sufficient sunlight. As a result, the battery does not need to be switched on or off manually. The controller has a multicoloured LED to indicate the charging and error state.

    Status LED and troubleshooting

    LED DISPLAY OPERATION/CHARGING (LED green)

2 SEC. BETWEEN FLASHESStandby: The controller is ready for charging. Charging starts as soon as there is enough sunlight.

FAST AND SHORT FLASHINGCharging runs at low current (input current ~ 3.5 A)

LONGER FLASHINGCharging runs at high current (input current ~ 3.5 A)

LONG THEN SHORT FLASHINGThe charge controller is being operated outside the permissible range and the input current is limited. Check whether the nominalvalues for the solar module correspond to the permissible input values for the controller.

LED LIGHTS UP CONTINUOUSLYBattery is completely charged.

    LED ERROR DISPLAY (LED red)

2 FLASHES, THEN PAUSEOverheating: The internal temperature of the controller is too high.

3 FLASHES, THEN PAUSE OVERLOADController restarts automatically. If the error persists, check the module specification and installation.

4 FLASHES, THEN PAUSEThe controller cannot start the charging process as the battery voltage is too low. Charge the battery in another way before using the controller.

5 FLASHES, THEN PAUSEBattery voltage too high: This error can occur, amongst other things, as a result of a disconnected battery or a defective fuse.

2 × LONG FLASHES, FOLLOWED BY FREQUENT SHORT FLASHESInternal error: Contact Torqeedo Service.

If the LED on the controller does not light up when the battery is connected or if the controller does not charge even though there is sufficient sunlight, the internal fuse may be defective. The most common reasons for this are:

    • Controller is incorrectly connected to the battery
    • The solar module input has short circuited. These may cause further internal damage to the controller.

If the Power 48-5000 cannot be switched on when the charge controller is connected and there is strong sunlight, there may be overvoltage. In this case, please check the solar module specifications. The same applies if the error message ‘Overvoltage during charging’ is displayed in the above-mentioned conditions.

    Monitoring and maintenance

The solar charge controller does not require any maintenance. Nevertheless, the charge controller and the cables should be checked regularly for external damage. Use only a soft cloth and mild detergents that are compatible with plastic materials (e.g. washing-up liquid) to clean the product. Do not use any chemicals or solvents.

    Replacing the fuse

torqeedo, 2218-00, solar, charge, controller, power

The fuse is located in the fuse holder on the back of the unit. To replace it, open the fuse holder (2), remove the fuse and replace it with a new ATO® (10 A, 58V) blade fuse.

Torqeedo Solar pannel 45 W Almost complete autonomy

Clean charging was never so easy

Electric outboards are ecologically advantageous in many ways. They are emission free in operation and they require a lot less energy to propel a boat. But that is not all: Unlike gasoline outboards, electric outboards can also be operated completely from clean, renewable energy supplies such as solar power. Thanks to Torqeedo’s solar charge options, this opportunity has become not only ecologically advantageous but also extremely convenient and simple. Just plug the solar panel directly into your Ultralight or Travel 503/1003 battery and charge your battery wherever you want – even while operating your motor.

Key features of Torqeedo flexible solar pannel

    • Simple plug-n-play charging for Travel and Ultralight models
    • Rollable with casing for easy transport and storage
    • Extremely weatherproof: Successfully tested in full salt water immersion
    • Extreme durability to match all conditions
    • High efficiency performance even in low light conditions or when partially shaded.
    • Environmentally friendly mater

On the move. speed, range, run time Using the solar charger, Travel and Ultralight models do not need a mains power outlet any longer – so you can be on the move all day long. The solar charger provides a power of 45 W. Due to the record-level efficiency of Torqeedo outboards this is sufficient to run continuously just from solar power. On a dinghy, you can expect a free-solar speed of about 3.5 km/h, in a kayak you can run even over 4 km/h.
