    About the Powerwall 2.0 Home Battery

    With its sleek and beautiful design, the Powerwall 2 is perfect for any home or business owner that would like to reduce the amount of energy they use, implement alternative and green solutions, or would just like to save money. Unlike the previous design, the Powerwall 2 is flatter and more rectangular in design. With 13.5 kWh of energy, the average home or small business property can benefit from only one Powerwall 2, unlike the previous generation.

    Tesla Powerwall 2 Installation: Features and Benefits

    Switch to the Tesla Powerwall 2 and upgrade your property. Here are some of the benefits that this installation will grant you with:

    • Use solar power at night – Tesla Energy batteries can make the power of the sun available for your home or business at any time of the day. During the day the battery charges from excess solar energy provided by your panels. At night you draw on that energy to power your needs.
    • Reduce your utility bills further – Even if your solar power system is not designed to replace all your power needs, the Tesla Powerwall/Powerpack can be programmed to reduce peak demand during hot summer days so you’re drawing less from your utility. The state-of-the-art sensors constantly monitor electricity production and consumption allowing it to control where your power comes from.
    • Implement zero net energy (ZNE)– With proper planning, you can end up meeting your power needs night and day entirely from your own solar energy system.
    • Ensure an emergency power source – A solar panel system with battery back-up can keep the lights on when storms and other conditions knock your neighbors “off the grid”. Keep your essential devices running in an emergency.
    • Become energy-independent – You are your own power company. And solar power is independent of oil pipeline breaks, gas shortages and world politics that monopolies use to increase your energy costs.

    And the function of this battery isn’t just limited to providing backup power when the grid is down. Alternative Energy Southeast, Inc. is able to program the home battery to perform in various ways that are custom-tailored to drastically reduce power bills for those depending on their utility rate structure.

    For example, a Georgia Power customer on the Time-of-Use rate plan, which has lower rates year-round except during the peak hours i.e. summer weekdays from 2-7 pm, can have the battery programmed to discharge however much energy the building requires during those times. If the customer has solar installed, the Powerwall 2 will supplement the power the solar is producing. When you go Green, you can save green!

    Tesla Powerwall Lifespan

    The Tesla Powerwall comes with a 10-year warranty guaranteeing the battery will retain 70% of its original capacity by the end of the 10 years. Like all batteries, the capacity will deteriorate over time. The rate of deterioration depends partly on the amount of use, and the battery could even last you more than 10 entire years.

    The Tesla Powerwall 2 has 13.5 kWh of energy. When compared with the previous model’s 6.4kWh, the newer Tesla Powerfull 2 model has twice the capacity. Its power output capability is also a lot greater, that being 7kW peak and 5kW continuous. If you are looking to install a home battery that will provide your home with a great amount of energy then this is the home battery for you, as your entire home can be supplied with energy from a single battery. this was not typically the case with the older Tesla Powerwall model. At Alternative Energy Southeast, Inc., we can install up to ten entire batteries in your home, to ensure optimal energy levels. It is a great solution for property owners who know they utilize great amounts of energy, and is especially beneficial for commercial energy purposes.

    Tesla Powerwall Cost by Size

    While a standard single battery costs 11,500, the more batteries you buy, the less you pay per unit, and the bigger the discount you receive. The average home can manage with one Powerwall, but this will likely only give power backup for one day and won’t be able to run larger appliances like an AC unit for long.

    Tesla Battery Specs

    Before you buy a Tesla Powerwall, you probably want to know how it will work in your home. From making sure it will meet your home’s energy demands to knowing how efficient the Powerwall is, here are the important battery specs to note before buying.

    Chemistry

    Like most solar batteries, the Tesla Powerwall is a lithium-ion battery with lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (Li-NMC) chemistry.

    Output

    The Tesla Powerwall 2 output includes 5.8 kW of continuous power or 10 kW of peak power. The continuous power is how much the solar battery can release over a period of time and will help you determine how many appliances you can run at once on the battery power. The peak power refers to the highest amount of energy the solar battery can supply in a short time period.

    Battery Depth of Discharge

    Tesla Powerwall has a 100% depth of discharge (DoD), which is the amount of battery discharged compared to the battery capacity. Most solar batteries have a limited DoD of 80% to 100%, which can help the battery extend its lifespan.

    Efficiency

    The Tesla Powerwall has a round-trip efficiency of 90%, which is slightly more than the average round-trip efficiency, 80%, of a common solar battery. Round-trip efficiency refers to the amount of energy that is stored and then retrieved later. The higher the efficiency number, the less energy the solar battery needs for itself to run (AKA giving you more bang for your buck).

    Compatibility

    This product is widely compatible with many existing brand-name solar power systems and solar inverters, so you don’t have to purchase an entire solar system from Tesla if you already have panels in good working condition.

    Warranty

    Tesla Powerwall has a 10-year comprehensive warranty to cover claims relating to the Powerwall, solar inverter, and roof mounting and leaks. The company also offers a 25-year panel performance warranty for its solar panels.

    Tesla Powerwall vs. Other Popular Solar Battery Brands

    While Tesla Powerwalls may seem expensive, when compared against other brands, you can see that, in general, they offer greater storage capacity and continuous power output to comparable alternative products.

    Tesla Powerwall vs. Generac PWRcell

    How long will the Tesla Powerwall provide power?

    For the “how long” question, it once again comes down to two factors: usable storage capacity and the duration of time you’re using each appliance. Whether or not you have a solar panel system alongside your battery is also a very important consideration.

    Usable storage capacity

    The usable storage capacity is a measurement of how much electricity a battery stores. Usable storage capacity is listed in kilowatt-hours (kWh) since it represents using a certain amount of electricity (kW) over a certain amount of time (hours).

    Tesla Powerwall usable storage capacity = 13.5 kWh

    Functionally, this means you can use either 13.5 kW for 1 hour, 1 kW for 13.5 hours, or something in between.

    Duration of time you’re using each appliance

    Next, you’ll want to figure out which appliances you plan to use, and for how long. These calculations depend on the power consumption of your particular appliances; below are some common examples. With the Tesla Powerwall, you can power a:

    • 3,500 W air source heat pump for just under 4 hours;
    • 300 W TV for 45 hours;
    • 200 W refrigerator for 67.5 hours;
    • Five 20 W light bulbs for 135 hours;
    • 25 W phone charger for 540 hours;
    • Or a 6 W Wi-Fi router for 2,250 hours.

    It’s a good idea to figure out the power draw of the essential electronics you’d need in a blackout, such as your Wi-Fi, computers, and refrigerator, and then calculate how long the Powerwall will last for you.

    Are you pairing your Powerwall with solar?

    Whether or not your battery is paired with solar is another important consideration. If you only have a standalone Powerwall, in the event of a blackout this battery will be your only source of energy. You won’t be able to recharge it until grid power resumes. However, if you have a solar system as well, you’ll be able to recharge the Powerwall almost indefinitely, with the battery storing the energy produced from your panels.

    Ultimately, how much of your home the Powerwall can support–and the duration of time it can do so–depends on your specific combination of appliances. Like any other battery, the Powerwall has a limited storage capacity (unless you’re pairing it with solar!), which means there will be tradeoffs involved when using its power.

    If you’re using only the essentials, like your Wi-Fi, phone, refrigerator, and some lights, you can expect the Powerwall to hold you over for around 24 hours during a blackout. Alternatively, if you’re adding in other electronics, like your TV or air conditioning system, this will cause the charge to last a fraction of this time. While your particular power needs may vary, around 24 hours for the essentials is generally a good rule of thumb.

    If at any point you’re concerned about the charge of your Powerwall, don’t worry! You can monitor the energy level in your Powerwall using the Tesla app, which also allows you to customize the energy use of your Powerwall for specific circumstances, such as maximizing protection during a power outage.

    Frequently asked questions about using a Tesla Powerwall

    Yes, a Tesla Powerwall is one popular battery storage solution to power your home. There are two main ways to use it to do so — both for using more of your solar by storing the excess energy and also using it as backup power in the event of a utility power outage. The amount of time the Powerwall can power your home depends on a few factors including your energy usage.

    When you’re deciding if you want to purchase a battery for energy storage, one common question is how long a Tesla Powerwall or another battery will power common household appliances like a refrigerator. The length of time a Powerwall will power it depends on how many watts the refrigerator uses. For example, it’ll power a 200 W refrigerator for 67.5 hours.

    The amount a Powerwall can power depends on the appliances and items you’re using in your home and how long you use them. If you’re using your Powerwall during a power outage, you can extend the time it’ll power things by minimizing the use of less necessary items including your dishwasher or dryer.

    tesla, solar, wall, battery, installation, cost

    You’ll want to weigh all of the costs along with the benefits to decide if you should get a Tesla Powerwall. It is one of the most popular batteries on the market today and many people enjoy the security it brings to provide backup power as well as increased efficiency in using energy from solar panels. However, you’ll need to decide if the cost is worth it for you. You will also incur charges for installation and potentially need additional electrical work depending on your home setup.
