Marnie was so pleasant to have in our home. Not once did we feel any pressure to purchase and when we did make the decision to purchase new Windows and door, she made sure we fully understood the process and that we were comfortable every step of the way. She was very fluent and professional and even inspected our attic and let us know of some leaks when we weren’t even purchasing insulation services from her. Hands down I would recommend Marnie as she is a wonderful brand ambassador.

Had them come and put all new Windows. Great from the beginning with Eric who gave a spectacular presentation on their products. To the installers. Very clean throughout. Definitely recommend them.

Our daughter has POWER Windows. We decided to have listen to their presentation. It was such a good product, we couldn’t pass it up. Cameron actually left for a good 1hr to give us time to think about it. The time he gave us made it easy to move forward. Thanks POWER.

Decided to replace old aluminum Windows on house so started looking at Angie’s List/Home Advisor and found Power. Courtney was the Sales rep who came out to show the Windows. She was professional very knowledgeable about the Windows. She showed a sample of window all its features. She answered all our questions concerns and even provided very reasonable financing for the project. Will use Power again for future projects!

William B. was our consultant and he was very knowledgeable and helpful. He took his time to explain everything to us. Power has high quality Windows that truly left me in awe. Some of the Windows just got installed and I love them! Very happy with Power and will be replacing all of my Windows with them.

    – Iracema Arevalo

We had the pleasure of working with Hunter when he came to our house for an estimate on replacing our Windows. He was punctual, courteous, and incredibly knowledgeable. He took his time in going over options to make the project fit within our budget and left us feeling confident and secure. I highly recommend this company!

    – Richelle Dallas

Worked with Aaron Pettway with Power to get quoted for new roof, new family room, Windows, and radiant barrier/attic insulation. Ended up choosing to install new, energy efficient Windows in family room (hottest room in our home!) All our interactions with reps from Power were very professional, personable, and informative. We really look forward to lower energy bills and a more even comfortable family room.

Power Home Remodeling does great Windows! We’ve always wanted to replace them, and the price is more reasonable than I thought it would be. Cody is very knowledgeable, professional and friendly. I highly recommend Cody and Power Home Remodeling, you won’t regret it!

Headquartered in Chester, Pennsylvania with offices in 18 territories across the United States, the award-winning company’s primary product line includes Windows, siding, doors, roofing, solar roofing panels, and attic insulation.

In this article we will share how our Tune Report opens a new window helped Power speed up their application by reducing their average page load time from 5 to 3 seconds.

    Our Challenge

Power provides homeowners with top-rated customer service, and quality, energy-efficient products that help upgrade their home’s exterior. While a home remodeling company at its core, Power has also become a leader in workplace culture, leadership development, and technology.

Behind the scenes, Power’s unique, state-of-the-art collaborative intelligence platform—known as Nitro—enables seamless, real-time communication across the business.

The company’s technologists are responsible for developing and delivering Nitro’s software through continuous integration, as well as the three data centers that manage it.

According to Wade Winningham opens a new window. Principal Developer, “We don’t use third-party applications for our sales, lead generation, tracking, and fulfillment. We’ve built everything ourselves and we’re proud that we operate our own platforms and technology without much reliance on an outside Cloud.”

Wade, who helps set standards for the entire department, is always on the alert for ways to enhance and refresh their technology infrastructure. For the past six years, they have reached out to us anytime they needed support with Ruby on Rails maintenance, development, and upgrades opens a new window.

Several years ago, the Ruby on Rails version underlying Power’s software was getting stale, but due to the size of their application, it was going to be a daunting task to handle internally.

We were hired to help with the upgrade from 3.2 to 4.0 opens a new window. “OmbuLabs/FastRuby.io is an expert in Ruby and Rails, and we knew it was going to be in our best interest to hire them,” explained Wade.

“The upgrade was a huge success opens a new window. The developers were top notch, knew what they were doing, understood our internal application, and helped us through it.” We collaborated with Power’s team to get them all the way to Rails 6.0 and then they continued their upgrade journey.

Our next challenge was to find ways for our clients to identify optimization opportunities within their Rails applications.

    The Solution: Tune Report

Recently, in partnership with Nate Berkopec opens a new window from Speedshop opens a new window. we launched our new Tune Report opens a new window. which helps our clients accelerate their Ruby applications, reach a higher level of performance opens a new window. and reduce server costs.

We shared our new service with Wade and his team, and they immediately saw the benefits. “We thought it would be great to have an outside perspective of our application. The Tune Report would look at areas that we weren’t focusing on or even aware of having potential issues.”

Nitro Create 2023: Power’s Tech Community Collaborates

    See the results:

Our first step was to meet with everyone involved. The business technology team provided access to their repositories, internal hardware statistics, application metrics, and codebase to monitor and observe the application.

After we had a chance to explore, read, and analyze the source code, we delivered our Tune Report, which provided a list of key areas that could be immediately addressed and others that could be improved upon over time.

Doing with Less: Improved Server Performance Results in Reduced Costs

Power’s applications run in a containerized environment. Their theory was that if they had more server instances and fewer processes running in those servers spread out over a wide area, that their application would be more resilient.

However, our Tune Report revealed an excessive amount of memory available, compared to the amount of CPU they were able to use within their servers.

Our recommendation was to reduce the number of server instances and increase the number of processes that each server executed.

For example, instead of having 60 servers with 2 processes, it would be far more efficient to have 20 servers with 6 to 8 processes each.

With more processes per server, there is less chance of one of those being busy when a request arrives. By making this adjustment, we were able to drive down the wait time from an average of 20-50 milliseconds to almost 0 milliseconds.

With this, and all other changes made so far from the report, page loads were reduced from 5 seconds to below 3 seconds.

“This was a huge win for us because we were able to size our application accordingly across multiple server instances,” said Wade. “It only took a few days to test this and verify that they were right.”

By running fewer server instances, hardware is freed up and computational power can be reallocated; ultimately, this results in cost savings and increased speed using half the server capacity.

We also found ways to improve query performance by adding indexes in the database. “These were simple for us to add and immediately improved performance across our application,” said Wade.

    The Importance of Regular Checkups

For Wade, the Tune Report was like another set of eyes on areas they may not have thought to look at.

“It was great to have OmbuLabs/FastRuby.io’ insights. They came in, showed us where we could make improvements, and it was easy to implement their suggestions.”

Our team delivered a report that enabled Power to show noticeable results to non-technical stakeholders:

“Our executives were thrilled with the report,” shared Wade. “They liked the fact that we could take action immediately to experience an almost instantaneous impact, and recommended that we invest in a Tune Report on a regular basis.”

Wade felt the Tune Report was well worth the time and effort of getting an outside perspective and said:

“I was shocked that we were able to do so much in a short amount of time and to show that kind of return on investment. The Tune Report came at a really great time and showed us how beneficial it was to do—not just once, but routinely. It’s like taking your application to the auto mechanic for a checkup.”

“I really enjoy working with OmbuLabs/FastRuby.io. They’re experts at what they do, and I’ve always been impressed with their skill, professionalism, and knowledge,” concluded Wade. “They are also very involved in the Ruby community which just adds to their credibility.”

    Summary

The collaboration between Power and OmbuLabs/FastRuby.io exemplifies how external experts can bolster in-house technological capabilities. The Tune Report proved an invaluable resource in optimizing Power’s Nitro platform, leading to improved performance and cost savings.

The success of this collaboration underscores the importance of regular performance audits opens a new window and the value they bring in terms of enhancing user experience, reducing costs, and maintaining a competitive edge in a technology-driven world.

The Tune Report, product of a collaboration between FastRuby.io and Speedshop, proved instrumental in identifying optimization opportunities, leading to a significant decrease in average page load time, from 5 to 3 seconds.

One of the key recommendations, reducing the number of server instances and increasing the number of processes per server, resulted in a drop in wait time from 20-50 milliseconds to almost 0.

    Knowledge expertise

They thoroughly explained the materials they would use and showed us samples. They knew our porch roof had only a slight pitch and shingles never should have been used in the first place which, apparently, the crew who put shingles on it didn’t know. If we had any questions while the work was being done, we would call and get an actual person who would take care of things.

    Installation was long

The technician was very professional and answered all my questions. I love the Windows. I just think it should have been at least 2 people installing the Windows. But it was only one person and it took from 10 am til 7:30pm. But another person showed up at 5:30 pm. I believe if 2 people performed the installation the entire time, it would have completed the job sooner. Besides that there where no other issues.

The Windows materials are excellent and…

The Windows materials are excellent and the installation crew are friendly. Two things that I have observed: There are several small dents after installation on the wood frame for several Windows and I can fix those. Also, when replace the front arched Windows about the front door (complex work), I did found a lot of broken glasses in the stairs and upstairs. Have to vacuum floors and stairs several times to ensure to pick up all glasses.

    Overall very good experience

Overall very good experience. Everything went well from estimate to installation to clean up. Quality workmanship and materials. Probably not the cheapest, but sometimes it’s worth a little extra for the ease of mind. The only thing I found a tad much was the requirement for both of us to be present for the estimate and signing documents/making decisions.

Veterans Help Power Grow Its Workforce

Photo courtesy of Power Home Remodeling Group

Hansen, founder of the Veterans Initiative and Power’s national director of military affairs, says the goal of the initiative is to capture some of the best and brightest talent from the military to help Power scale and grow. He says the company is consistently growing at a rate of 20 percent annually and the Veterans Initiative is a large part of that.

It’s not a charity, it’s not a philanthropic endeavor. This is a strategic business initiative because we’re able to capture unique access to unique talent that we normally wouldn’t get from our traditional talent pipeline, Hansen says.

Hansen says veterans are coachable, trainable, and adaptable—all skills that are essential to not only adapting to life at Power, but to ultimately succeeding and growing at Power.

Whether it’s sales, marketing, or operations, veterans are succeeding across the board. Veterans are currently the top performers in sales in 10 out of 16 Power territories and veterans currently lead in every statistical category in customer development, according to Hansen.

They got a breadth of work experience that’s equally, if not ten times better, than some of the other applicants we’re getting just because of the magnitude of leadership and responsibility they had to uphold in the military.

Employees with senior military experience have been a huge asset in Power‘s strategic planning efforts as far as scaling and logistics, as many have experience supervising and moving soldiers and equipment during military missions, skills that transfer well into Power’s workforce, Hansen adds.

The Sky’s The Limit For Power’s Veteran’s Initiative

Power currently employs 225 veterans, which represents 8 percent of its workforce, and 13 percent of the company’s new hires are veterans or military spouses.

Power’s workforce is expected to double in the next five years and veterans and military spouses could make up 15 percent of that workforce, according to Hansen.

The company will also have better access to military talent through legislation that allows for internship and corporate fellowships for military personnel. Hansen says this will provide an opportunity for mid/senior-level military personnel to do three-month, government-paid fellowships with Power.

We can use that three-month fellowship as a bridge to expose them to us and find a better position and customize a position for them with is, he says.

Veterans who are with the company for 90 days are eligible for a 3,000 signing bonus to help them with the transition to the job.

Outside of the Veterans Initiative, Power has a strong reputation nationwide for their FOCUS on energy efficiency, sustainability, and solar and clean technology.

Hansen says Power is a growth-minded organization that’s expanding across the country. The company is headquartered in Chester, Pennsylvania and has 16 satellite locations serving in 24 states.

We’re really just building the tracks across the country, so as new clean technologies continue to become available, we’re trying to be the best interface for the consumer so they can be at almost net zero or producers of their own energy, he says.

The Veteran’s Initiative has played a major role in the company’s success and that success goes back into the initiative.

By aligning our military program with a business strategy, we’re actually able to propel our business and the propulsion of the business is allowing us to grow this initiative, Hansen says.

Hansen hopes other companies will follow Power‘s example and treat veteran initiatives as an essential part of their business plan, and not just a feel-good measure.

As a veteran my goal is to show people what we’re capable of and also tell other veterans of what they’re capable of and I think because of that, not only are we changing the narrative about veterans across the country but we’re changing the narrative about veterans to veteran themselves.

Power Aims To Keep Its Workforce Connected

Power brings portions of its workforce together on a yearly basis during three company summits. One summit focuses on women, another focuses on diversity and inclusion, and the last one focuses on veterans. These summits include leadership training and team-bonding activities, according to Hansen.

Hansen says Power has a 12-person special events team that works to put together and promote company-bonding/community service events throughout Power’s different territories. Power also ends each year with a company-wide retreat to Mexico.

Welcome to Power Home Remodeling Headquarters!

We really try to promote connecting people with each other and their communities and that over time across the aggregate of the company creates this very big groundswell of connection to community and connection to each other, he says.
