    The first portable battery station from Leoch (a well-respected battery manufacturer in China), this LiFePO4 unit delivers quite a punch. Its usable capacity of 2 kWh along with an inverter of the same power gives this somewhat bulky unit a ton of juice as an emergency backup around the house or even connected to your electrical panel to power your home’s basics. Originally available via Indiegogo, and now Amazon, shipping kicked off in March 2021 (they’ve fulfilled all orders to-date). You can currently enjoy a steep savings off the retail price of 1,995. And while its solar charging input of 300 watts leaves a bit to be desired, the company is looking to increase that power before long (update: it’s been upgraded to 600W). Already a great value for capacity this size, toss in the true UPS functionality, and there aren’t many solar generators on the market that rival its specs for the price.

    Features an impressive 13 output ports

    What good is a large capacity power station if you can’t connect a ton of stuff to it? This unit does quite well in that category. With 4 AC outlets (2,000 W, surge 4,000 W), 2 regular USB 2.0, 2 QC USB (18W), 2 Type C PD (65W), 2 DC (36 W) and 1 12V Car charging port, that’s a heaping 13 total output ports. Most notably are the pair of type C ports. Type C is the wave of the future and most newer laptops already run on them. So, while the 4 USB type A ports will always be backwards compatible, the 65W PD ports give this unit plenty of future-proof appeal. With respect to the 12V car charging port, it is regulated and since the unit is LiFePO4 anyways, there’s no issue of large voltage drops as the battery gets depleted.

    Onto the AC outputs, this power station gives you a healthy serving of 4 110v wall outlets, all pure sine wave. You get 2,000W of continuous power out of each port with the ability to accommodate a spike in power of up to 4,000W (eg, when a drill or heater initially turns on). Compared to other solar generators in its class, it’s right up there near the top of output options and associated power from each port.

    Usable capacity is a kind of a big deal

    As far as total usable capacity goes, the Leoch 2048Wh legitimately gives you right around that power or just a bit higher (it’s common in the industry to have the usable capacity clock in around 80-90% of advertised). So, it’s a breath of fresh air to have a company over-deliver on capacity. Now, since this is a lithium iron phosphate battery, that extra capacity will last you well over 3,000 charge cycles… and much longer if you keep the state-of-charge between 20% and 80% (that goes for any LiFePO4 battery).

    As far as how long or how many times it can charge stuff around the house, here’s a quick breakdown: Smartphone (200 times), tablet (80), laptop (50), portable fridge (100 hrs), regular fridge (18 hrs), CPAP machine (50 hrs). coffee maker (95 cups), etc. So, given the capacity and charge rate, the Leoch 2048 could be a very serviceable backup “generator” as well, similar to the popular Honda 2,000Wh gas generator, without all the fumes and maintenance. One such way would be to setup a transfer switch near your electrical panel and power 4-6 of the most important circuits in your house. Solar and/or DC charging should be plenty fast enough to keep you going for days, if not years given the right setup.

    Started on Indiegogo and this is Leoch’s first consumer unit

    Indiegogo, much like Kickstarter and the other crowdfunding sites, lets backers support the development and pre-production of a new product by purchasing it at a big discount. Technically, you’re not guaranteed the product and should the company just not have the capital or expertise to get the item to market, you’re conceivably out your contribution. It doesn’t happen all too often but is a real risk. So, trust in the company you’re backing is a big deal.

    With regard to Leoch, they’ve been supplying batteries to top car manufacturers for over 2 decades, so while this is their first consumer product and it’s on Indiegogo, there’s relatively low risk here. They’re using their own batteries for the unit (no supply problems, especially important during COVID) and their team has delivered a ton of critical use batteries to EV manufactures for years without issue.

    Update (5/15/21): Leoch has shipped out all their purchased units. The first couple batches had a few bugs that Leoch quickly patched (and did well to address). All current units appear to be issue-free. The initial Indiegogo campaign ended in late February and the campaign moved into Indemand status. This phase lets anyone continue to purchase new units (at surprisingly the same price as earlier backers).

    Four different ways to recharge, up to 900W (2.3 hrs)

    This unit has three different input ports, AC, Solar and an external charger (Cannon connector), each rated for up to 300W. The external adapter, which would be sold separately, can combine with AC or solar to provide each with up to 600W of charging power. A bit unpractical but you can also combine all three for up to 900W of input power.

    Solar power: up to 600W

    As in the diagram, you can setup two sets of solar panels each delivering 300W of juice (this can be done with a total of 4 or 6 panels, depending on your setup). The max open circuit voltage for each set is 40V so wiring up your panels in parallel is probably going to be the best solution for most. Keep in mind you’ll need to purchase a separate 300W external solar charger with a Cannon connector, but it’s quite worth it if you want maximize your cycles/day (goes without saying but we highly recommend you get an MPPT type charge controller, which is also the type of Leoch’s internal stock controller).

    AC Power: up to 600W

    As with solar, you’ll use two input ports, this time the AC outlet along with the Cannon connector. Again, the external AC charger is a separate purchase (and different from the solar charger above) and only needed if you want to upgrade from 300 to 600w. Charging the Leoch 2048Wh at 600W will charge the unit from drained to full in about 3.25 hrs. For a solar power station of this size, that’s excellent. There are just a couple other units at or near this capacity that have a faster charge rate (Bluetti 2000Wh, Ecoflow 1300Wh). While charging, you can track the total watts being delivered via the Leoch’s easy-to-read LCD screen.

    Combined power: up to 900W

    If your application requires an even faster recharge, use all three input ports to get a combined power of 900W. Granted, that’s a lot of wires and requires additional chargers but it’s nice to have the option. The easiest way to get this done (as in the diagram) is via two AC charging wires and one solar array. Each provides 300W for a total of 900W juiced straight into the battery. Going this route will charge the unit in about 2.3 hrs. Of course, good solar conditions are the wildcard but that’s a given. Note that this and the improved AC/solar charging were all upgraded due to numerous requests from Indiegogo backers (kudos to the company for listening and taking quick action).

    DC charging: up to 150W

    Charging up a lithium ion battery directly from DC is probably the most stable and efficient way for its chemistry. You’re capped at 150W, but in a pinch or camping in the middle of nowhere, it’s a solid option. The input port on the Leoch is an Anderson type outlet and, for example, can easily accommodate your car’s 12V outlet. You could also have a smaller 12V battery bank ready to go as a backup if AC or solar isn’t viable wherever you’ll be.
