    • Expandable: Add batteries as you go

All models except the 3000W include the 240V AC charger.

    Electrical / Software features

    Low frequency inverter:

The Rebel features a low frequency inverter. Low frequency inverters are extra heavy duty. They use powerful transformers (lots of copper!) which makes them more reliable and sturdier than the cheap high frequency inverter’s MOSFETs. MOSFETs use electronic switching and are more prone to damage, particularly at high power levels.

    • Low frequency inverters have a much higher tolerance for harsh and humid environments, making our solar generators ideal for use in emergency situations. Plus, our Rebel’s inverter has conformal coating on the PCB, further reducing the potential water/moisture damage to the electronics.
    • Low frequency inverters have a higher surge output than high frequency inverters. (300% surge versus typical 200%) For example: The 4,000W Rebel has a 12,000W surge rating.
    • The surge rating of 300% is for a full 20 seconds! Almost all solar generators except the Rebel have a surge rating of about 10 milliseconds to 2 seconds.

All models except the 3000W include the low frequency inverter.

For TONS more options and customizations, check out our beta features and generator accessories.

    Rebel Advanced Features

The Rebel Advanced Features are not intended for beginners or novice users. However, all it takes is a little bit of reading and some patience to become an advanced user. The following features can be accessed on all Rebel Solar Generators. They are described in detail in the Rebel Inverter Manual, but feel free to ask us if you have any questions.

    • Automatic transfer switch operation: This is similar to a conventional UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) used with computers and electronics. This requires the Rebel’s 240VAC input AND240VAC output to be continuously connected to your home or building. Note: The Rebel’s Input is sometimes referred to as Shore power or shore connection. With this feature enabled, your home or building will continuously run on power from the grid until the grid goes down. Within 8 milliseconds of the grid going down, power will be transferred to the Rebel’s inverter/battery off-grid system only. Visit Rebel Inverter Manual section 2.5.5 for more details.
    • Gas Generator Auto-start for backup charging: (Only works with gas generators that have auto-start function). When the Rebel’s battery voltage drops to 10.0V DC (21.0V DC on 24V models), the Rebel will send a signal to start your gas generator. The gas generator will remain on until the batteries are fully charged. This allows you to maximize your free solar/wind power, but still have the reliability and dependability of a gas generator. The auto-start feature is completely automatic, so no more waking up in the middle of the night to start up the generator! Visit Rebel Inverter Manual section 2.5.13 for more details.

Combining these two features equips your home or business with the most cutting-edge backup power system available on the market. The system takes advantage of the best of both worlds; free and reliable solar power as primary, but still the option of falling back on traditional gas generator power. These two advanced features (along with Rebel’s other features) will provide a fully automatic backup system that you will never have to think about!

    Background

An introduction to solar generators and Cutting Edge Power:

Solar generators are an excellent investment for hurricane / natural disaster preparation, backup power for your home, camping, tailgating, medical devices, refrigerators, air conditioners, construction equipment and tools, CPAP machines and more. Future maintenance of Cutting Edge Power products is easy with simple hand tools and off-the-shelf parts, unlike some solar generators that are worthless if one component fails. Designed in America and professionally wired in Houston, TX so you can rest assured you’ll have the best performing solar generator available.

Featuring our new high performance solar charge controllers, these solar generators can be used with virtually any battery on earth. Installing your own batteries is super easy: Just connect the supplied 5/16” ring terminal wires to your battery’s posts.

Cutting Edge Power lithium battery packs are welded, assembled and tested in Houston, TX. Even better, our lithium batteries are factory-installed when purchased with a solar generator. Our lithium batteries provide about 450% lifetime and 100% run time over traditional lead acid batteries. Plus, they’re about half the size.

    about our lithium batteries

    SAFE. COMPATIBLE. POWERFUL.

Cutting Edge Power’s wind and solar lithium-ion battery modules are the best way to pack more power and run time into a smaller space. Leveraging the amazing performance of our lithium cells and the resulting smaller footprint, our battery modules provide up to 450% lifetime and 100% run time over traditional batteries!

The cells are imported from the most reputable cell manufacturers in the world that also supply Tesla and other high performance companies. Cells are arranged in plastic holders. These plastic holders are a custom in-house design and they’re made in our shop. The cells are then welded together using a special machine designed and built by Cutting Edge Power! The plastic holders are then assembled and mounted inside your solar generator. All of this is done in Houston, TX.

Each cell array is continuously monitored by redundant Battery Management Systems (BMS), not just one like most battery manufacturers. If one module were to go out, you would still have the remaining modules in operation. The multiple BMS systems protect all cells against overcharging, overdischarging, as well as overcurrent. They also equalize all the cell voltages and keep the pack running cool.

    #2: COMPATIBLE.

PERFECT FOR SOLAR OR WIND TURBINE CHARGING.

Our lithium battery modules will be factory installed in any Cutting Edge Power solar generator when purchased together. Adding a lithium batteries to an existing Cutting Edge Power solar generator is as easy as ordering a pizza with our custom drop downs.

We call them modules, because our entire solar generator product line is modular. We understand sometimes you need testing before you know how many batteries you need. battery modules can easily be added later and it only takes about 5 minutes.

We don’t believe in proprietary connectors or special permanent installations. No other connection or additional assembly on your part is required! Terminals on our battery modules allow you to quickly and easily replace old batteries. You can even replace our batteries with a different type or manufacturer!

Why are they so small, what’s the catch?

Our battery cells were pioneered by the auto industry so they have a high energy density in order to keep cars lightweight and extend their range. This means a smaller battery pack can have up to 2x the run time as a standard SLA battery. Combining the small size and higher energy density, our batteries will maximize your run time in a compact solar generator!

DIYers love our lithium batteries for the small footprint, cool operating temperatures and high energy density!

Only our lithium batteries provide about 450% lifetime and 100% run time over traditional lead acid batteries. Plus, they can do this in about half the size!

Compared with traditional batteries, Cutting Edge Power lithium ion batteries have a higher run time, higher cycle lifetime, better power density and charge faster. They also weigh less than LiFePO4 and a single module can even provide a higher discharge rate than multiple SLA or LiFePO4 batteries! In wind and solar applications, our lithium batteries have proven to be superior against lead acid, NiCd, AND lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries.

    • Can be recharged within 8 hours with SolarSaga 100W solar panels.
    • Two USB-C, two USB, one DC car port three pure sine wave AC outlets

    The Good

The USB-C Ports: The Jackery Solar Generator 1000 has two USB-C ports. I wouldn’t consider a power bank without at least one USB-C port – more would be better. The USB-C port can be used as either an input (to charge the Jackery Explorer 1000) or as an output (to charge a device). It’s more than capable of powering USB-C devices – even laptops and tablets.

The Solar Charging: The SolorSaga 100W solar panels do an excellent job of charging the Jackery Explorer 1000 – provided you have it out in direct sunlight. Hooking them up is simple and if you have sunlight available the most difficult part will be finding space to set each of the panels up. Charging the Jackery Explorer 1000 from zero to 100% in direct sunlight takes approximately 8 hours. The solar panels are compatible with other Jackery units, as well.

The Operating Temperatures: One thing I worry about when traveling in and living out of my car is the temperatures my car (and therefore my gear) will experience. I often find myself in areas where temperatures are either exceeding 100°F / 38°C or dropping below freezing. Fortunately, the operating temperature range of the Jackery Explorer 1000 is 14-104°F (-10-40°C). I’ve yet to have a problem with it in either the heat or the cold.

    The Okay

The Panel Size: The Jackery Solar Generator 1000 comes with two SolarSaga 100W solar panels which aren’t compact by any measure. The panels fold in half (with a handy magnetic closure) and measure 24 x 21 x 1.4 in (610 x 535 x 35 mm) folded or 48 x 21 x 0.2 in (1220 x 535 x 5 mm) unfolded. They are thin and store nicely so long as you have somewhere flat to stick them. I’ve put them at the bottom of my roof box or between folded-down seats in the past. I’ve been pretty rough with them and they’ve held up surprisingly well.

The Time Remaining: A drawback of the Jackery Explorer 1000 is that despite having a battery percentage remaining on the unit, there’s no indication of time remaining until empty. This is to say, if you plug in your laptop to work, you’ll have to gauge the remaining time you have based on the time that elapses between checking to see what battery percentage is left.

    jackery, solar, generator, 1000, review

The Buttons: To begin charging with the Jackery Explorer 1000 you need to hit a button adjacent to the plugs you will be using to turn them on. I usually find myself having to do this either in the dark or while blindly reaching into my car and finding the buttons a tad annoying. Perhaps if they had small lights (when off – they have lights when on) or were embossed or texturized to make them easier to find/push – maybe switches instead? I don’t know.

The Portability: The Jackery Solar Generator 1000 isn’t particularly light at 22.04 lb / 10 kg. The single handle across the top can make it a bit cumbersome to carry (as opposed to two handles on either side). Each of the SolarSaga 100 solar panels weighs in at 10.33 lb / 4.69 kg each. It is possible for a single person to carry the Explorer 1000 and two SolarSaga 100 panels alone, but they’re bulky at best.

    The Bad

The Bundle: One thing that stands out to me about the Jackery Solar Generator 1000 is that despite buying what’s essentially a bundle of the Jackery Explorer 1000 and two SolarSaga 100 solar panels, there’s just a small price break – 50. It’s a lot of money to be investing in a system and a 3% discount for buying the Generator instead of the Explorer 1000 and two SolarSaga 100s separately isn’t much of an incentive.

    Who is it for?

The Jackery Solar Generator 1000 is the ideal piece of gear if you want to keep your small, medium, or even large electronics charged while traveling or camping off the grid – so long as the large devices don’t need to be sun for too long. If you’re a small or medium-sized group (three to five people), the system should be able to provide you with all the power you need to keep your devices charged – particularly if you plan on taking full advantage of the solar panels.

If you’re looking for something to power a refrigerator, grill, or other large electronics, the system will work great so long as you’re not running things for hours at a time. For a system to power your devices 24 hours a day, you’ll want something more substantial. But even in this case, the Solar Generator 1000 is a great product to have as a backup.

    Wrap Up

The Jackery Solar Generator 1000 has enough capacity to keep your large devices running longer, but comes at the cost of some weight and bulk. It’s certainly portable, but not necessarily something you’re going to want to be lugging around in your backpack.

That said, for a basecamp, car camping, or stationary outdoor adventures, the Jackery Solar Generator 1000 can do a solid job of powering your off-grid adventure – especially if you’ve got plenty of sunlight. Solar Generator 101: The Ultimate Solar Generator Buyer’s Guide 2023

When most people talk about solar generators, they’re often referring to a portable power station that is powered by sunlight. For context, you can think about a solar generator as a larger version of a portable power bank that can charge and power not only small devices, but nearly all of your electronics and appliances. Like other generators, solar generators provide portable power, but instead of using diesel, wind, or gas, they use sustainable solar energy to generate power.

Generally, solar generators contain a battery, an inverter, and multiple outlets, and they usually are capable of being powered very efficiently with solar panels. For the user’s convenience, they typically offer USB-A ports, USB-C ports, car cigarette lighter ports, and AC outlets that users can directly plug into, and charge their devices. Some might offer additional charging options like barrel plugs (a rounded output for outdated devices) and wireless charging to support wider ranges of devices and appliances.

    jackery, solar, generator, 1000, review

A solar generator is an ideal portable power solution in various scenes where the grid is not accessible. It is a perfect choice for people to bring with them during camping, road trips, and other outdoor activities. It’s also possible to use a solar generator as an emergency backup when encountering power outages caused by unstable grid or extreme weather.

How Does A Solar Generator Work?

A solar generator usually works with solar panels, which are used to gather sunlight and convert solar energy to electricity. After harvesting, the sunlight that has been converted will be stored in the batteries, which can be used to provide DC power for DC outlets such as USB outlets, the car cigarette lighter, and wireless charging, or it can go through an inverter to provide AC (alternating current) power from AC outlets.

However, many people hesitate to go all in on a solar generator because it is known that the solar harvest is strongly affected by environmental conditions. Solar charging is often time-consuming and may take 5-8 hours on average to fully charge. That’s why some portable power stations have introduced MPPT (maximum power point tracking) technology to regulate and optimize the energy extraction as conditions change. On an average, industry MPPT technology can support a conversion efficiency of around 94-97%, however the industry leading technology from Growatt can reach an efficiency of 99% while utilizing up to a massive 800W of solar input, making it possible to fully charge within just 2.5 hours.

What to Look at When Buying a Solar Generator

    Capacity/ (Wh)

A watt-hour indicates the battery capacity of a solar generator, which is the most important specification to look at. The battery capacity also determines the size, and the weight of a solar generator since the battery can take up 60% of the total size and weight especially nowadays when many users might prefer larger capacities. Under the same discharging environment, a larger battery capacity means that you can run the same devices for longer, and possibly power more devices at the same time, but that doesn’t mean a larger capacity is better, because as the capacity grows, the weight of the battery also increases. If you require portability when using solar generators outdoors, you may want to avoid large systems that are difficult to carry.

    Power Output/ (Watt)

The output power level decides the types of devices you can power and charge. You need to pay attention to this specification because the output power must be larger than the total rated power of your electric needs in order to keep all your devices running properly, especially if you want to run them all at once. You must understand your electric loads and make sure you have high enough output power to ensure your solar generator can meet your needs.

    Discharging Hours

How long can a solar generator run? The answer may vary depending on different models and different discharging situations. For example, if you run a high power device like an electric grill or microwave oven, power will be consumed very quickly. But if you only need to power your smartphones or laptops, even a tiny model can provide all the power you would need for a weekend trip. Here’s a quick calculation so that you can easily estimate the time of discharging:

Battery capacity Usable percentage (usually 80%~82%)/ rated power of your device = Discharging time

    Charging Speed

Despite sunlight being inexhaustible, we only have limited sun hours in a day. As mentioned before, on average, a solar generator needs 5-8 hours to charge because of the limited solar input it can handle, but the Growatt INFINITY 1500 can finish charging in only 2.5 hours with 800W solar input. This means you can charge your devices with solar panels much faster when using Growatt’s solar generator.

There’s also a formula that you can use to calculate the solar charging hour:

Capacity / maximum solar input = Solar charging hours

Takes INFINITY 1500 as an example,

Due to the intensity of sunshine and various environmental factors, there might be a disparity between the actual solar charging hours and the calculated times. But Growatt can guarantee that INFINITY 1500 portable power station can be fully charged in 2.5 hours.

    Battery

Solar generators on the market mostly use NMC batteries and LFP batteries. NMC stands for lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide, while LFP stands for lithium iron phosphate. Because of the different material compositions, they show different densities, life cycles, and stability.

It is hard to tell which kind of battery is better, but you can have a look at the table to see the differences between them.

    NMC Battery

    LFP Battery

Weight Size (w/ the same capacity)

As you can see, NMC batteries are smaller in size but have shorter battery life cycles and stability, but LFP batteries are larger but have longer battery life cycles and safety. If portability (lighter weight and smaller size) is what you are looking for, you can choose solar generators with NMC batteries. And if you value longer cycles or safety, LFP batteries are a better choice.

    Outlets

You need to look at the number and types of outlets of the best solar generator. The number of outlets determines how many devices or appliances the solar generator can charge or power at the same time, and the types of those outlets dictate which type of device or appliance can be plugged in.

    Solar Generator vs. Diesel Generator

Diesel generators are known for their capability of handling larger power loads than other generators and have been a favorite choice for many people. Yet their shortcomings are apparent when compared to solar generators in these aspects:

    Cost

The core of these generators is to generate power from sunlight or diesel, right? You need to have the power source, either sunlight or diesel oil, for them to work.

Diesel oil is consumable. You will have to buy diesel oil constantly for if, when, and in case it runs out. That makes the cost of using diesel generators cumulatively increase over time.

Alternatively, the purchase price of a solar generator is usually higher than a diesel generator ranging from 3 to 8 times at the same output level. Despite a solar generator seeming to be more expensive than a diesel generator, when talking about the cost, there are a few important key factors.

The only additional costs for you to generate solar power is the up front cost of solar panels. You don’t have to pay extra for the sunlight which is inexhaustible. All you have to do is to put the solar panels under the sun when it is sunny outside and solar panels can last for years with only basic maintenance.

So if you look at the long-term benefits, a solar generator is often a more cost-worthy choice.

    Environment Health

Diesel generators emanate strong fumes when diesel is burnt as fuel. The pollutants in those fumes, including nitrogen oxide, pollute the air so much so that they cannot be used indoors. In addition, diesel is nonrenewable, states like California have already banned outdoor appliances like weed wackers and leaf blowers due to their carbon impact, it might only be a short while before other states follow suit with things like generators.

The fumes that diesel generators emanate also have a strong smell, and are extremely harmful to our health. Especially for people who have respiratory problems, the smoke and smell may worsen their problems.

As for solar generators, each and everyone of them can endlessly use renewable solar energy as a power resource, and will not produce those hazardous substances as diesel generators do when generating power. In fact, no fumes will be emitted, so there is also no smell when they work.

    Portability

When it comes to portability, a solar generator is a winner. It is smaller in size in general, and more importantly, the power can be stored in the batteries that have been already designed in it. When you go out for a trip, all you need to take along is the solar generator itself and the solar panels if you need to charge the batteries outdoors.

However, if you are bringing a diesel generator with you, you would also have to pre-purchase and bring the diesel oil with you. Sometimes, this may become a problem when you cannot estimate how much you’ll need during the trip. And if the diesel is used up, you will need to spend time looking for a diesel provider or gas station which are not available everywhere. Besides, the larger machine and extra fuel will increase the burden when carrying.

When do you need a solar generator?

Solar generators can be used in various scenarios both indoors and outdoors. We live in an era where technologies develop rapidly and we can barely live without electronic equipment. So it is important to always have accessible power to keep our life moving. And that’s when the solar generator plays an important role.

The Components Of a Solar Generator

Now that you know what a solar generator is, it’s time to explain the critical components of the system.

    Solar Panels

Also referred to as photovoltaic cells, solar panels convert sunlight into electricity. Solar generators use portable and foldable solar panels to differentiate them from rooftop panels.

    Charge Controller

When the electricity is generated by the solar panels, the first component it reaches is the charge controller (or regulator). As solar energy is generated at variable rates, the charge controller’s job is to shape and condition electricity to avoid overcharging. The highly efficient solar generators are equipped with MPPT technology that ensures nothing is damaged when power flows through the system.

Another core component of the portable solar generator is an inverter that turns direct current output from solar panels to alternating current. The job of the inverter is to draw energy from the solar system and transport it to appliances.

    Solar Battery

The electricity generated by solar panels is stored in the solar battery until it’s needed. Most modern solar generators have an in-built lithium-ion battery to store current collected by solar panels.

The Usage Of A Solar Generator

A solar generator can be used in multiple ways, including but not limited to:

    • Emergency Backup Supply: Frequent power outages and emergencies are the main reasons homeowners choose solar power systems. A reliable and efficient solar solution can power essential appliances like medical equipment, refrigerators, lights, etc.

How Does A Solar Generator Work

A portable solar generator works when a solar panel converts sunlight into usable energy, which is electricity. Solar panels collect the sun’s energy during the daytime and transfer it to the battery storage system. Compact and transportable solar generators are convenient power solutions that charge appliances anywhere.

Here is the breakdown of the process:

    • Solar panels convert sunlight into DC electricity which then passes through the charge controller.
    • The charge controller regulates electricity voltage before storage, ensuring the proper current flow to the battery.
    • The built-in battery stores all the power to charge the electrical devices later.
    • The inverter converts DC to AC power to power most appliances and devices for hours.

    The Types Of Solar Generators

Below are the three main types of solar generators.

    On-Grid Solar Generator

This type of generator connects to the power grid to charge appliances. Solar panels capture sunlight to transform it into electricity in the form of DC. Then, the direct current is converted to AC in the power board. The board transfers electricity to power homes and buildings.
