Tesla Solar Case Study: Cost, Savings, Review, and

Sharon McDonnell is a travel writer who is passionate about sustainable living and ecotourism.

Tesla is famous for their solar roofs, but they also install solar panels. A LeafScore reader in NorCal shares his experience installing Tesla solar panels at his home in the East Bay.

For his three-bedroom home in Piedmont, California, a small town in the East Bay Area, Alder Yarrow, a wine writer and strategy consultant, chose Tesla for his solar installation in July 2021. He paid about 35,000 for the system, using Federal and state tax credits that dropped the price to about 28,000, and saw his monthly electricity bills cut in half, from about 300-500 a month to an average of 150.

much, does, tesla, solar, roof, cost

He kindly walked us through his solar project step by step, sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly.

    Applying for Tesla solar panels

He didn’t shop around for a solar provider, since he knew people who worked at Tesla, and people whose solar projects were installed by them. The application process was smooth, he notes – you apply online, and get an evaluation of your home’s solar potential, which they do through satellite photography.

“For example, maybe you have a chimney, skylight or gas vent they have to fit the solar panels around – I had all three, on my multi-level home with a steeply-pitched roof with a lot of angles and peaks – or trees that cause lots of shade,” he adds.

    The power of battery backup

Since he wanted battery backup, he chose two powerwalls, as recommended. “Battery backup isn’t just helpful in emergencies, during power loss due to wildfires, but on a daily basis, since you pull energy stored in the battery first before pulling energy from the grid, and so save money. During the day you’re not using much energy, evening is peak demand,” Yarrow says.

    Tesla solar panel installation experience

He chose solar panels, not a solar roof – which uses Tesla’s own technology and was almost twice the price of panels. They gave him an estimate, and he made a deposit (fully refundable) of about 1,000.

Tesla then offered a proposal, a design for where the panels would go, and a detailed estimate. It cost less than the original estimate, since they couldn’t fit as many panels on his roof than initially thought. He approved it, and made a 50% down payment.

A crew installed the solar project in one day, about a month after he approved it, and paid 50%. “I had to send photographs of all my electrical panels and exterior walls, so they’d know where to install the power walls.”

“Then, I began a looong, slooow process. This is where the hiccups started.”

    Alder Yarrow

Tesla finished the installation, except for digging a deep hole and putting in grounding rods. It’s a safety requirement, so if the house is struck by lightning, the electricity is conducted into the ground. Several new electrical boxes were mounted on the outside of his house, which meant moving a gutter downspout, an extra 700.

As he waited to hear when the grounding rods would be installed, which were required for him to pass the building inspection, six weeks went by. Instead, his project manager, tasked with submitting solar power plans to the local municipality for the permit required, said the inspector would come on a certain date. His house passed the inspection.

“Then the three-month battle to get my grounding rods in begins. Tesla says, you don’t need them because you passed inspection, but I did need them; it’s a requirement,” notes Yarrow. “I must have done seven phone calls, 27 emails – horrible customer service.”

Permission to Operate and system start

After the grounding rods were put in, it took four months for Tesla to submit his solar project to Pacific Gas Electric to obtain the all-important Permission to Operate letter, which means you can finally turn on your solar installation and start saving money.

So since Yarrow’s system was installed in July 2021 but didn’t start running until November or December, he says he lost hundreds of dollars, since he had to keep paying PGE the full rate all that time. “Tesla had no financial incentive to act since they already had my money,” says Yarrow.

After PGE turned on his solar system, “It worked like a charm,” he says. His monthly electricity bills plummeted from about 300-500 a month to 188 in April (“it was cold, so lots of heat”), only 23 in May (“it was mild”), 90 in June, and 220 in July (“it was hot, so lots of air conditioning”).

“Tesla probably has the best technology in the business.” The long delay beforehand? “My customer service experience was atrocious.”

In a comparison of the best solar providers in the US, Forbes gave Tesla an A for BBB Grade and a Very Good customer rating, praising its Pros: a “well-designed and easy to use app with monitoring and control,” “powerwall bundled with every Tesla purchase” and price-match guarantee with other solar providers. Its only con noted some customers experience installation delays.

The Tesla Solar Roof, designed by Tesla, offers a sustainable and energy-efficient alternative to modern day roofing. The roof comes with solar glass shingles and an integrated Powerwall battery to store generated energy. Though expensive—a two-story, 2,000 square foot, 11.28 kW Solar Roof costs just over 55,300 before incentives, assuming you’re replacing the original roof—the roof is intended to save money in the long run by reducing or eliminating a homeowner’s electricity bill entirely.

What Is a Tesla Solar Roof?

Designed to maximize your home’s energy production, the Tesla Solar Roof is the first of its kind to enhance your home’s aesthetic while lowering your energy bill. The Tesla Solar Roof is constructed with a combination of glass solar tiles, glass roofing tiles, and architectural-grade steel tiles. The innovative roof is also built to be energy independent with its Powerwall, a compact home battery so it can be available throughout the day and even at night. Lastly, the solar roof is built to last. Each solar tile remains intact within all-weather conditions, ensuring your home stays protected rain or shine.

    Tesla Solar Roof Cost Estimates

Rather than directly publishing rates, Tesla provides a Solar Roof calculator on their website that estimates the cost of installing a solar roof on your home. The calculator is based on your current electricity usage and the size of your home, among other factors. We ran three basic estimates to give you an idea of the price differences. Each estimate includes a roof replacement but does not factor in any incentives.

FYI: All estimates were run on July 13, 2021.

    1,000 Single story 6.31 1 Powerwall 46,425
    2,000 Two-story 12.57 2 Powerwalls 64,193
    3,000 Three-story 18.83 3 Powerwalls 81,961

    Factors to Consider

Tesla changes their depending on a number of factors, including those listed below.

    Roof Complexity

Tesla recently introduced variations in installation depending on your roof complexity. Grouped into simple, intermediate and complex, the classification is intended to reflect the difficulty of installing a new roof onto your home. Though your roof may not meet all the criteria of a given category, in general:

    • A simple roof is single-level with low pitch and few obstructions
    • An intermediate roof is multi-level with a higher pitch and more obstructions
    • A complex roof is multi-level with a steep pitch and many obstructions

Though there is no known set rate of increase between classifications, based on our hypothetical estimates using the Tesla Solar Roof calculator, you can expect a difference anywhere within 5,000 to 10,000 between each level.

    Roof Replacement

The Solar Roof is meant to be installed on top of a single-layer 3-tab asphalt or composition shingle roof that is less than 20 years old. For any other roofing material, or on any buildings more complex, the roof must be replaced entirely. At its cheapest, requiring a roof replacement will add between 10,000 to 15,000 to your total.

    Additional Costs and Upgrades

Depending on the current infrastructure present in your home, Tesla mentions that it may be necessary to perform additional upgrades during installation. This includes services such as extra electrical work or installation of a Solar Roof on a shed or deck. are quoted directly to you upon inspection, but it is important to note that they are not included in the Solar Roof calculator estimate.

Using your home’s equity is an easy way to fund your new roof!

Get prequalified in minutes by clicking on your state.

    Powerwall

As part of the Tesla Solar Roof package, it is mandatory that you also use the company’s integrated battery system, called Powerwall. Powerwall collects up to 13.5kWh generated by the solar panels throughout the day and then uses that energy to power the home anytime energy is not being generated, such as at night or during a power outage.

It can also monitor power usage. The more appliances you intend to run using the Powerwall, the more devices are required: for example, a single Powerwall cannot run any large appliances, but three Powerwall units can run multiple large appliances at the same time. You can have up to 10 Powerwall units connected to the same system.

A Powerwall currently costs around 6,500 for the battery unit. Installation and set-up fees add another 4,000, ending up at a total price of 10,500. Each additional Powerwall unit costs 6,500 each, with no known additional installation costs. As having a Powerwall system is required in order to have a Solar Roof, it is important that you ensure all your devices are capable of accessing the software and that you know exactly what purposes and appliances you want to use the battery for.

    Incentives

Federal or state-level incentives may deduct a significant amount from your final bill. The Tesla Solar Roof calculator helpfully factors in these incentives. You can also find them listed on the Tesla website. While incentives vary at the state level, any roof installed on a residential building from 2020 to 2023 can expect a 26% Federal Tax Credit.

    Process

A Tesla Solar Roof may take a while to install. In some rural or less populated areas, Tesla may not yet perform installations of the Solar Roof. If this is the case for your location, contact Tesla directly for more information about when Solar Roof services will become available to you.

You can purchase your Tesla Solar Roof directly from the Tesla website, paying an initial deposit of 100 in order to confirm your order and calculator estimate. Tesla then remotely designs a Solar Roof system specifically for your house, using information that you provide and satellite imagery.

Then, any authorizations or permits that must be granted have to be approved. After that, installation of the roof will take place, followed by a necessary inspection from local authorities and then the final connection of the Powerwall system to your utility grid. The exact timeline and requirements for finishing any of these steps will vary depending on a number of factors. This includes, but is not limited to, your location, the number of third parties that must be involved and the weather.

Importantly, these steps may accrue extra costs not estimated by the Solar Roof calculator. Take this into consideration when reviewing your initial estimate.

Tesla Solar Panels vs. Tesla Solar Roof

Tesla Solar Panels can be installed on top of existing roofs and are significantly cheaper than a Solar Roof—though still expensive compared to other solar panels on the market. The same two-story, 2,000 square foot house from the article’s introduction would only need to spend 26,900 (before incentives) to have Tesla Solar Panels installed.

However, these panels would only generate 8.16 kW instead of the Solar Roof’s 11.28 kW, making it more difficult to be self-powered. Powerwall also comes with the Tesla Solar Panels if you are interested in storing your energy.

Tesla Solar Roof Cost vs. Solar Panels Cost

Tesla Solar Roof is a revolutionary glass solar roof that completely replaces your current roof. In comparison, traditional solar panels are installed directly on your existing roof. Therefore, Tesla Solar Roof tiles will be more expensive than traditional solar panels, costing 21.50 per square foot. While traditional solar panels typically cost between 4 to 10 per square foot.

Did Tesla Drastically Increase Its Solar Roof Price?

Due to supply chain costs and enhancements made to the solar roofs, Tesla has drastically increased the price of its solar roofs. The new have factored in the complexities of installing Tesla solar roofs, which was an oversight in the past.

much, does, tesla, solar, roof, cost

What Size Tesla Roof Will You Need?

When considering installing a Tesla Solar Roof, its size will be determined by a few key factors, such as where you live, the characteristics of your roof, and your current energy use. However, Tesla offers four standard solar sizes to deliver high-quality solar systems at industry-leading prices.

Is It Worth It to Get a Tesla Solar Roof?

If you’re willing to pay the high price point, need to replace your roof and like the idea and sleek aesthetic of Tesla’s solar shingles, then it may be worth it to get a Solar Roof. Otherwise, Tesla’s Solar Panels, or even traditional solar panel systems such as those found on Forbes best solar panels for home guide, may make more financial sense while still increasing your home’s energy efficiency.

Tesla’s solar options are significantly more expensive than other solar companies and renewable energy alternatives on the market, and the company has had a record of changing quoted for the Solar Roof fairly regularly. However, if you have the finances and do not mind integrating your home into the Tesla system, a Solar Roof is a good long-term investment for your home.

To arrive at the average costs in this article, a number of providers and cost databases were surveyed on national and local levels. All averaged figures were correct at the time of publication and may be subject to change.

    Tesla Powerwall Installation

The Tesla Powerwall is the premier solar energy battery backup solution for both residential and commercial solar installations. It provides you with the ability to capture the energy from your solar system and store it for use later, so you can gather energy during optimal sunlight hours that will be available for you during peak power usage times later in the evening.

    Clean Energy And Energy Security

The decision to go solar for homeowners or commercial buildings is often because you want:

    • Cleaner energy from a renewable source and a lower carbon footprint
    • Energy security so you don’t have to rely on the local power grid for your energy

Whether you are going solar for one or both of those reasons, the Tesla Powerwall battery backup is the ideal solution. With a 14 kilowatt-hour (kWh) storage capacity and 13.5 kWh of usable energy, it’s offers the most battery backup capacity on the market today. An average home uses about 28 kWh of energy each day, so the Powerwall can easily meet most home’s power needs after the sun goes down.

For homes that require more energy or commercial buildings, the Powerwall is designed as a modular system, allowing you to install as many batteries as needed for your energy requirements. Tesla Powerwall batteries also come with a 10-year warranty and qualify for existing state and federal tax credits, which can help offset the initial cost.

    Complete Energy Management Solution

In addition to the battery backup, the Tesla Powerwall comes with a Tesla Gateway and built-in battery inverter. It offers monitoring, metering, and management for your entire system, learning your energy usage patterns over time to optimize storage and usage rates. The convenient mobile app gives you the ability to monitor things like:

The Powerwall is even designed to automatically disconnect from the local power grid in the event of a power outage. Many local power companies will require that your solar panels shut down during an outage, so disconnecting can allow your system to continue generating energy during a daytime outage. The time between the system detecting an outage and bringing your power back online is just fractions of a second, which is much faster than a typical backup generator.

    Simple Installation

Getting the Tesla Powerwall is simple and easy.

Some homes will need upgrades to the main electrical panel, and our experienced team can let you know if that will be the case for your home. Once installed, you’ll have full visibility into the system through the app and can start conserving energy, reducing your carbon footprint, and be more energy self-sufficient.

Intermountain Wind and Solar will come and connect the Powerwall battery backup, along with the Backup Gateway, to your home’s main electrical panel.

Call Intermountain Wind and Solar today to learn more about the benefits of a Tesla Powerwall battery backup for your solar system, and schedule an installation.

    Tesla Powerwall

A Tesla Powerwall stores excess solar power. It’s designed to charge electric vehicles (EVs), shift power usage and provide short-term backup power for self-consumption.

    HOW IT WORKS

The Tesla Powerwall is usually paired with a home solar panel system. A house equipped with solar panels usually produces more electricity during the day than it consumes at the time of generation. This extra solar power can be stored in the Powerwall battery instead of being sent back to the electric grid.

At night or when the solar panels are not producing enough electricity to meet the home’s demand, the homeowner can pull energy from the Tesla Powerwall instead of having to buy it from the utility.

The self-contained, waterproof unit is always on, operates quietly, and can be mounted on the floor or wall individually or as part of a stack of multiple batteries.

    BENEFITS

    MONEY SAVINGS

Programmed to store power when energy rates are lower and to use stored energy when rates are higher.

    OUTAGE PROTECTION

Ensure power in the event of a grid outage.

    ENERGY INDEPENDENCE

Store surplus solar energy during the day for usage when the sun isn’t shining.

    COST

A Tesla Powerwall costs about 18,000. Additional required equipment may include a gateway, related hardware, and labor costs. However, this is before local solar rebates and incentives go into effect. The entire system including installation is eligible for the 30% federal tax credit and may also be eligible for local rebates.

    WARRANTY

Tesla offers the Powerwall 2 with a 10-year warranty on parts and performance (70% energy retention) after the initial installation. Click here to learn more about the Tesla Powerwall warranty.

    PEACE OF MIND

“Great working with the crew at Freedom Solar. The process was transparent and went as promised. The system delivers exactly as advertised and I couldn’t be happier. It’s wonderful to be contributing to the environment while maintaining peace of mind with Tesla Powerwall backup when the grid goes down.”

    David H.Georgetown, TX

0 We ordered our Tesla battery to augment our already installed solar array. We called right after the big winter storm in February 2021. Understandably, there was a six month wait. But the team made it as easy as possible. They handled literally all the paperwork. I filled everything out once. Then as each part of the process, such as permitting, came up they sent the already filled paperwork to the responsible party. It was almost like having a full concierge service. As for solar and a battery. We have 20 panels and a single Tesla power wall. We have an older pool pump and a 2400 square foot home. Two adults working from home. The pump on the pool runs 8 hours a day. With the battery we are 50% to 70% self powered monthly. It is a balance with winter months not being so sunny and also not needing to run the AC. The benefit I didn’t really understand until seeing it was that the battery could hold us over almost all night. It was cheaper to use our own power from the battery then it is to send power back to the grid. IE. You send power back at x rate and get a credit. But use power later in the day at y rate. Y rate always ended up more costly then x rate. So better to just keep our power and use it our self. The real benefit is that we literally could power our house with no pool for a few days if it got bad with some solar production. The battery can also be notified of a storm and hold on to a 100% charge plus get power from the grid to get there. It won’t save you a TON of money. But it gives us a ton of peace of mind. Plus feels good to not rely so heavily on the Texas grid. Azucena K. Austin, Texas

1 I’ve only had my battery for a week and it’s already backed up the house 4 times; three 15 minute power outages; and this past Tuesday morning I was noticed I was on the battery for just over 6 hours; turns out the grid was having multiple power surges (as high as 257.5v) and the Tesla system detected these surges and went into its “back-up mode,” separating from the grid and going to battery power…the Tesla battery is expensive but IS worth the cost. So far I have no regrets, and don’t expect any. Dale M. DFW, TX

3 Installed Solar and Tesla Powerwall 2 in January 2021. Then the storm of all storms hit in mid-February with 9 days of below freezing temps. The setup never missed a beat and exceeded my expectations. We never lost power throughout the entire storm and the Powerwall was the primary reason for that success. Everything that was discussed in the installation review and how it would perform was spot on. Steve S. Austin, TX

4 At first I was very hesitant to even consider the product, however after much review, research and the teams answering my questions I decided to go ahead and install the Solar System with Battery backup power. I am convinced that I have made an excellent investment, and that the team installing my equipment did it with absolute professionalism. Here is a extra star for ensuring great (Customer Success). Thank you! Daniel S. Tampa, FL

5 “Highly recommend Freedom Solar if you’re considering solar panels and/or Tesla Powerwalls. They were AWESOME to work with, from the first phone call to…well, I’d say the last communication, but our solar consultant, Walter Anoruo, has been great at texting to keep in touch and checking in on our production, so there hasn’t been a last! We had 22 solar panels and 2 Tesla Powerwall 2s installed. Started the process in August and everything was closed out in late October. Some other takeaways: 1. Responsive and customer-oriented: – As soon as I called for the first time to get a quote, they picked up (which, apparently, some of their other competitors have difficulty doing…i.e., Texas Solar Outfitters) and were extremely helpful off the bat. After asking some general questions about what we were looking for, they scheduled a solar consultant meeting just a few days later. – Throughout the process, the Freedom team did a fantastic job at keeping in touch and being available for any questions. I could email, text, call, whatever, anyone on the team any time of the day and folks would be so responsive. 2. High quality product and install: – We were really drawn to the fact that Freedom is a one-stop-shop for the SunPower panels (which, after a fair amount of research, we do believe to be the best out there). – We’re only a couple months into the installation, but so far so good. Everything is working exactly as described. 3. Streamlined/easy process: – Freedom took care of all the permitting, etc., and so we found the installation process to be extremely streamlined. – They also have a relationship with Green Sky bank to offer 0% financing (which we are utilizing). They’ll even submit the application for you, so again, everything was just so easy.” Josephine V. Houston, TX

6 “Peace of Mind Great working with Zach Stirling and all the crew at Freedom Solar. The process was transparent and went as promised. The system delivers exactly as advertised and I couldn’t be happier. It’s wonderful to be contributing to the environment while maintaining peace of mind with Tesla Powerwall backup when the grid goes down.” David H. Georgetown, TX

7 They installed my Tesla powerwall 2s just how I wanted them to be and everything was within spec so that I wouldn’t have any warranty issues due to how I had them mounted. Great service and very professional. They answered all my questions before, during, and after the install. Irving F. Houston, TX

8 “Excellent service I had a great experience and quality service with Freedom Solar. Team members are customer friendly and very easy to communicate. I highly recommend this company to install solar and backup powerwall systems.” Al Austin, TX

9 Our experience with Freedom Solar has been nothing short of exceptional from beginning to end. Prior to meeting with our sales rep Devin, we had met with 7 other solar company reps and were not happy with any of them or the company they represented. Devin was the first to really understand our needs. He did not try to up-sell us. He was honest and extremely knowledgeable, as well as patient with us throughout the entire process. To complete our needs, we also purchased 2 Tesla Powerwall batteries. We visited the home office in Austin and everyone there was super friendly and happy to accommodate us. When the install team came out, they all worked together as a team and took time to explain what they were doing. After install, it was super easy to call Customer Service with questions and actually get answers! The one thing unique about Freedom Solar is that none of the work is subcontracted out, and all parts and labor are warranted by Freedom Solar so that in case of a problem, they will handle it for you. It is the only home solar warranty to cover your whole system, not just the panels. We feel confident in referring our friends to Freedom Solar. We certainly did our due-diligence in solar company research and found Freedom Solar to be the most honest with the best price, best equipment, and best service. From sales to field operations, from back office to customer care, Freedom Solar definitely lives up to their core values Mary M. Austin, TX

10 “Extremely rewarding installation experience We have had a thoroughly pleasant relationship with Freedom Solar Power. They completed the installation, managed the interface with our power company, and always presented a well-informed and professional experience. Since the instillation, activation, and commissioning of our system with twin Tesla Powerwalls, we have been off-grid for the entire month. We will recommend them to anyone who asks.” John B. Marble Falls, TX

11 In addition to Jason Hanley who was the key for us moving forward, I would also like to give a special recognition to Cain Badman who did an incredible job installing the gateway and batteries. We’ve been running the system for a week and are very satisfied. The combination of SunPower panels and Tesla Powerwall batteries is great. In addition to generating power, the system has already kept the house running during a utility outage without even a blink Oscar S. Houston, TX

12 The system was installed when they said it would and the Tesla Power Wall we purchased was here months early. The installation crew were terrific. They finished long before I thought they would. They were polite and efficient. Simply a wonderful and seamless experience. The operation of the system was fully explained and I now go out on a daily basis to look at my meter. Doing so makes me feel great about our small contribution to the environment. I cannot recommend Freedom Solar more highly. Ned M. Houston, TX
