Solar Water Heater Problems and Repair Guide (5 most common issues)

Solar water heaters are an important component in a house. They provide a constant supply of hot water for domestic or commercial use efficiently and cost-effectively, using free solar energy. The system works by collecting solar energy using collectors (tubes or flat panels) strategically positioned on the roof of a building and oriented for the best performance.

Today, solar water heaters have gained traction across the world due to their reliability and durability, including great ideas, available designs and kits, and advanced controllers.

Having basic knowledge about solar water heater repair is necessary if your water heater breaks down and you want to keep the expenses low. Like other solar-powered devices, solar water heaters can develop issues as time passes and elements start to deteriorate. If you are a homeowner and want to know about the common problems that are usually associated with solar water heaters, including troubleshooting them, then you are in the right place.

If your solar water heater was recently installed, keep in mind that periodic inspection and regular maintenance are needed to keep the system efficient and operational for many years to come.

But before we dive deeper, let’s quickly take a look at what solar water heaters are and how they work.

Need to Hire a Water Heater Expert?

    What are solar water heaters?

Simply put, a solar-powered water heater is an assemblage of solar collectors or panels, pumps, controllers, insulated storage tanks, and connecting pipes. The solar collectors are positioned to trap the maximum solar energy and convert it to heat – for free. The heat is then absorbed by water and stored in storage tanks for use in the shower, dishwashing, and clothes washing application.

They are perfectly safe as they are equipped with solar panels made of tempered glass and temperature and pressure relief valves to control the water temperature and pressure. Plus, the system comes with a circulating pump to help circulate water in the system, from the solar panel to a storage tank. Since some parts of the solar water heater are usually exposed to the elements, it is vital to protect them from overheating and freezing.

Commonly used types of solar water heaters

Solar water heaters are categorized into several popular types:

    • Thermosiphon systems.Thermosiphon systems are used to produce hot water by heating water directly or indirectly. The heating fluid is antifreeze, like glycol, so when going through the heat exchanger it transfers the heat to the water. The system uses the water storage tank installed above the collector so the fluid can rise by natural convection to the storage tank without using the pump. This type of solar-powered water heaters is very efficient in areas with high solar energy.
    • Integral system (ICS or batch) is, with the thermosiphon, another passive system used in regions with a lot of sunny days and where the demand for hot water is high. They are simply built utilizing one or more tanks that are painted in black, installed inside the box, and well insulated.
    • Direct-circulation systems. This type of a solar-powered water heater works by pumping water from the storage tanks to the panels during sunny hours, thus increasing energy use.
    • Drain-down or Drainback systems. In these systems, untreated or treated water is usually circulated via a loop. A heat exchanger is used to transfer heat to the potable water. The system uses controllers, sensors, and pumps to turn the system ON or OFF. In the evenings or nights, the water would drain by gravity to prevent convection loops and freezing.
    • Indirect water heating systems. These systems work by circulating freeze-protected water through a closed loop. A heat exchanger is then used to transfer heat to the water in the storage tank. Water-ethylene glycol and water-propylene glycol solutions are excellent examples of freeze-protected fluids to use.

Now, let’s take a look at the five most common problems associated with solar water heaters and how to fix them.

    Solar water heater commons problems

As with any other devices, solar water heaters are also prone to problems, element failures that cannot be avoided, and situations that would lead to costly repairs.

The most common issues with solar water heaters are sediment build-up, corrosion of the metal parts, deterioration (aging, wear and tear) of the non-metallic, freezing (in cold climates), fluid leakage, and insufficient hot water supply or no hot water at all.

Some of the problems can be prevented with regular maintenance, such as smooth operation and expected performance.

Preventing problems and what to check

    • Clean the collector glazing from soil, dust, leaves, vegetation, and other foreign materials that can affect the performance or damage the components.
    • Make sure the seals are not cracked and damaged and there is no fluid leakage.
    • Ensure that the bolts and nuts of the supporting structure are not loose.
    • Repair any crack on the collector glazing or replace it if needed.
    • Check the storage tank for leaks and make sure the valves are operating, especially the temperature and pressure relief valve.
    • If the sediment build-up occurs frequently, replace the heat transfer fluid if it is rich in minerals (hard water), or install a water softener.
    • Add the insulation where it is needed to reduce the risk of freezing and low performance.
    • Check the pump, sensors, and controllers, clean and replace if needed to operate properly.

Problem #1. Solar water heater not producing hot water

Sometimes, your heating system will work but won’t produce hot water. The cause of this problem is not far-fetched. During cloudy days or if the solar panel glass is broken, it won’t trap enough solar energy. With not enough solar heat, water inside the storage tank won’t get hot, especially if there is no backup heater, like electric heating elements. Another reason why your solar-powered water heater may not produce hot water is that the thermostat (in the heating element) may be faulty or set too low.

    • Ensure the solar panels are correctly positioned where they would receive maximum solar energy and check that the glazing is not broken, covered, or in shade.
    • Clean the panels with a rag to remove the dirt, leaves, and other.
    • Check the thermostat for appropriate settings. But if it is damaged, replace it.
    • Check to ensure that the sensor wires are correctly connected.

If there is not enough hot water, make sure that the solar collector is installed correctly and there are no obstructions. Check the sizing, tilt, orientation, and obstacles (shading).

Ensure that there is no thermosiphon overnight and there is no heat loss through the tank or plumbing.

Tip: Make sure all the components are working correctly (sensors, controllers, pump).

    Problem #2. Fluid leakage

Fluid leakage is one of the major problems that your solar water heater can develop. In fact, it is one of the leading issues commonly associated with solar-powered water heaters.

This problem is usually caused when a collector glazing or pipe is broken, or when the pressure relief valve in the solar panels is damaged and open.

Another possible cause of water leakage in a solar-powered water heater can occur due to lose pipe fittings and thermal expansion.

    Before you call a technician, do the following;

    • Check the pipe fittings and tighten any lose connection or replace broken pipes.
    • Replace the temperature or pressure valve with a new one or replace the seal.
    • Replace the solar panels if the glass is found broken.
    • Adjust the thermostat settings to reduce the system pressure.

Note: Before you carry out any troubleshooting work, ensure you isolate the solar panel.

Problem #3. Unusual noise in the pump

When you turn ON a solar-powered water heater, and hear an unusual noise coming from the pump, the chances are that there is a sediment build-up on the pump’s impeller, obstructing the impeller from rotating. Another possible cause of unusual noise in the pump is due to bearing failure. Also, make sure air is not trapped inside the system.

    • Access the pump and clean the impellers of any deposits or debris.
    • If you suspect bearing failure, then lubricate the bearing with an appropriate lubricant.
    • If the problem persists, you might need to replace the pump.
    • Loosen the vent screw if one exists or bleed the air. The air locked in the system could also prevent any flow, especially if the pump is not sized well.

Problem #4. Open circuit or loose connections

The moment your solar water heater stops working, chances are that there are open circuits along the connection line. As with other wire connections, solar water heaters are also prone to lose connections with time.

    • Trace the wire connections to check for broken cables or loose connection.
    • Use the appropriate tools to cut the defective part of the cable.
    • Re-connect the cable.

    Problem #5. Solar panel problems

This is another problem that homeowners need to be aware of. Solar panels can develop problems, so the collectors are not able to trap the maximum solar energy. One of the leading issues of the solar panel is broken glass. Since you cannot fix the broken glass, talk to your local installers to get several quotes, before deciding what to do next.

Another reason for solar panel problems could be that the coating or absorber paint has deteriorated. Furthermore, if there is condensation on the glass, it can affect the panel’s performance and efficiency.

    • If the solar panel glass is broken, replace the glass or replace the entire solar panel.
    • If you suspect that the coating or absorber paint has deteriorated, then repaint the panels with a heat resistant paint.
    • Create a small hole at the bottom of the panel to handle the problem of condensation on the glass.

    Summary

A solar water heater is a technology that has come to stay. Whether you want to take a warm bath or clean the dishes, a solar water heater can guarantee a constant source of hot water all year round.

When the system develops issues, the repair process should be on time and without spending too much money. It is good to know fundamentals so you can troubleshoot simple faults before engaging the services of a technician.

As seen from the troubleshooting guide, some problems are easy to identify and fix, while others, such as no hot water or not enough hot water, require more work before figuring out what is going on.

Baby kangaroo poo could be the secret to stopping cows’ methane farts, researchers say

Kangaroo poo could be a surprising ally in the fight against methane-spewing cow farts.

It may sound like science fiction from the brain of a 10 year old, but scientists at Washington State University are putting the roo poo to the test.

The researchers added a microbial culture made from baby kangaroo faeces plus a known methane inhibitor to a cow stomach simulator. The result? It produced acetic acid instead of methane.

Unlike the greenhouse gas, acetic acid isn’t emitted as flatulence and actually benefits cows by aiding muscle growth. So it’s something of a win-win situation.

I Highly recommend Supreme Solar Power to anyone looking for solar panel.

Mirabbs from Queensland I installed 6.6 kW longi panels with 5k Sungrow invertor. It was great experience dealing with Supreme Solar Power, I had incorrect panels turned in to my place, when I found they just managed to replace them quickly. the whole process was easy and they were flexible with installation arrangement. They also fit the invertor exactly where I wanted in between shelves at garage. Puneet also helped me with setup App. Right attitude. Highly recommended.

Scott W from Queensland After getting quotes and differing views from probably 5-6 companies my head was spinning. A widely held view is don’t go for the cheapest I think that’s good advise whilst SSP were not the cheapest more like middle of the road I was still a bit suspicious as there price was very reasonable. Puneet explains thing very well and came after installation to set up the Wi-Fi and answer any questions. He has remained very easy to contact and we have decided to use him to put Solar into another property of ours. Solar is an absolute minefield with a lot of disinformation so if you are looking I would highly recommend contacting Puneet SSP.

Jason Bewley from Queensland Puneet from Supreme Solar was very helpful, provided great communication throughout, was easy to deal with and was also very knowledgeable. I’d use them again for sure, thanks Puneet and team

Jay from Queensland Excellent service throughout the entire process of quotation and sales. Supreme solar and especially Puneet was recommended by couple of my friends. After talking to 4 different companies I finally shortlisted Supreme Solar for the following reasons:. Honest and genuine assessment of the solar requirements based on my monthly consumption Listening to the customer and not trying to push any upgrades or bigger system installations Selection of multiple reputable brands for all the three main components of a PV system, i.e. Inverter, Panels and Rails/Racking. CEC accredited installer and retailer On the day of the install it took a total of little over four hours from start to finish, the electrician doing the installation was very professional and explained everything and answered all my questions. The workmanship was excellent. After the installation of the PV system, Puneet did the app setup for the inverter. Please save yourself hassle and go with Supreme Solar.

Geo from Queensland I have installed Sunpower panels with Fronius Primo inverter. The installers were very professional and friendly. Competitive price. Always look for customer needs. I would highly recommend Supreme Solar to anyone looking for solar.

trevor from Queensland Whole process was easy with Puneets explanation of product. install was arranged without delay professsional team installed with follow up from Puneet. very happy with our panels and would recommend Supreme Solar Power highly

Manish Rathee from Queensland Extremely happy with the decision to go with Supreme Solar Power for our solar system in a new property. In only 4 months of the system running, we haven’d paid a single dollar in energy bill and have instead received a little over 400 from the power company in credit. Must commend the company’s approach in relation to understanding the exact requirements of the property, followed by a very honest, knowledgeable recommendation without any obligation. The installation was also carried out very professionally and the service continued well after the installation(setting up phone apps etc to track feed in usage), which is a rarity these days. Highly recommend the company and the products they offer.

Madan Kumar from Queensland We replaced our solar system in July. Solar system has been producing 30 kw on average.I am very happy with service provided by supreme solar power and will definitely recommend them anyone looking for solar.

Haseeb from Queensland Our friend recommended Supreme Solar Power to us in pallara. One phone call and the sales consultant came and explain the options to us. The solar was installed in 2 weeks. Very happy with the service and installation, I would certainly recommend supreme solar power to anyone looking for solar.

Alan from Queensland We had Supreme Solar Power install 20 x REC 330W NPeak Panels and a 5.0W Fronius Symo Inverter which Puneet recommended as we already had 3 phase power to the house. We managed to get 3 x quotes for a solar installation and we chose Supreme Solar Power because he could get us the 20x 330W panels where another company wanted to put in 21x REC 315W Panels for slightly more cost and the other had lower quality panels and inverter. The 20 quality panels seemed a more balanced approach. They did all the paperwork that was required and the meter was updated within two weeks. Puneet even came out to make sure that we were getting an efficient system and the chosen location on the roof was correct. We are very happy with this installation.

Mahesh Ramanan from Queensland The whole process from obtaining quotes to panel and inverter selection, arranging dates, installation and post installation support was smooth and easy. A big thumbs up from me!! Supreme Solar is highly recommended.

No lie to get your sales unlike much of the industry and a local business, will recommend to all my family and friends and use again if required. Certainly the very best!

Bruce Isak from Queensland Great team to deal with. Puneet is awesome and attentive and knows his things! Great price and service! Nil issues and they even helped set up apps and extended warranty

Nicholas from Queensland What a fantastic company. Puneet was highly knowledgeable and not pushy at all. He made the process very easy. Arun K from Queensland Quality work with an experienced team, would recommend the company especially Supreme solar power consultant came and explained in detailed the operations. The pricing was very good. I’d recommend to use them.

Hammad Khaliq from Queensland I was doing research on the solar system providers for quite sometime. many of them visited my place, but I was not satisfied with any of them as after visiting they just forward a quote without giving any awareness about the solar panels and invertors and more inclined towards the financial side of it. rushing to close the deal. When I researched about the panels, I came to know few of them even quoted me the end of sale solar panels. few of them even gave me quotes of a high-end more KW system that was not even required as per my usage. If you want to achieve max benefits of having a solar system at your place then you must know that its not only about installing solar panels and invertor only. It is about the quality of panels, the invertor their warranties, the size of the system KW that is required as per your consumption and after the installation the energy provider to go with to save max. When Puneet visited my place the first time, just after few mins of conversation I made a decision that I will go with Supreme Solar Power. He was not in rush, answered all my questions and advised the solar panels and invertor, and the size of the system that can give me max benefits as per my consumption, meter phase and space available. Not only that, even after the installation he followed-up and advised to switch to the energy provider that is offering best solar feed in tariff. The installation was done very quickly in few hours time as per agreed scheduled. very neat and tidy work, the electricians were experts and clean all the stuff after installation. I would highly recommend Supreme Solar Power as I had an excellent expérience with them without any pain in this dodgy market of solar system providers.

Darren from Queensland After two weeks of researching reputable solar companies and solar systems for our house, we ended up going with Supreme Solar Power. Puneet has been in the solar industry for a number of years and he knows his stuff! After our initial telephone discussion, Puneet took the time to visit us and go through solar in detail face-to-face which made us feel more comfortable about the whole process and in his company (there are so many solar companies out there and we wanted to choose a company that was not only reputable but one that had and will be around for a while). Puneet asked us a number of pertinent questions about our energy consumption, not only considering what we’re using on a day-to-day basis now but whether any future changes needed to be considered. On top of all the invaluable information provided to us, Supreme Solar Power provided us with an extremely competitive price. The installation was very straightforward, in fact the whole process with Supreme Solar Power was straightforward and stressless. After the install, Puneet was at our house the next day checking over the system, setting up the inverter App and showing us how to use it etc. He even suggested a few energy providers to consider for the best feed in rate. We cannot recommend Puneet and Supreme Solar Power high enough. the whole process, service and pricing was nothing less than outstanding! Thank you Puneet.

Mohammed M from Queensland The Process was very smooth, products where explained really well, I would highly recommend supreme solar power. They have done a great job with the installation and the after sales service has been excrement

Rajesh from Queensland The company offered excellent customer service, Puneet is highly knowledgeable and has been very patient responding to all our queries. We consulted various companies and received quotes from each of them but Puneet is the only person who asked the right questions and thereby was able to suggest a product that suited our needs. He never pushed us in picking the suggested product but provided with all the required information to make an informed decision. We got multiple home consultations throughout the process and a very competitive price for the product we selected. In fact, the entire process with the company has been very smooth starting from the quotation to the installation. Puneet went above and beyond. also provided advice on using the inverter app, energy provider selection, etc. I would highly recommend Supreme Solar Power.

Stuart from Queensland Installation was no fuss and completed well. Left area clean and tidy once finished. Communication was very good, easy to deal with from quotation through to completion. No hard sales pitch which was refreshing! very satisfied with service and would recommend this company.

Erfan Jalilian from Queensland I barely come across a small business that does everything almost perfect from A to Z. Puneet definitely did that. From the moment we called him he was very responsive, direct and helpful. After a meeting with him (within hours I called him) he thoroughly explained all systems and helped me find the right system with the right capacity for our newly built house, irrespective if I were going ahead with him or not, he was honest and he wasn’t try to ‘“sell” me his product or service and he was “genuinely” helping me get to the bottom of it. I usually do my homework well and after an extensive search I was fully convinced he’s offering the best possible product with the best possible service and price. We’re so happy with our Foronius Inverter and the information it generates on its app and web-app. I hope his business become even more fruitful with time.

Sachin M. from Queensland I did plenty of hunting around for a good deal and found Supreme Solar Power to have one. but most importantly they use proven quality panels and inverters. All other deals i could find with other solar companies had weak points or concerns that they do not do the whole process themselves. When I engaged Supreme Solar Power in the process we found them faultless in their services from going through our options of placement of the panels and showing us where shadows of neighbors house are in other parts of the year with their computer. to the quick turn around of installation and also showing us how to work the app to see live time plus history of what the system has produced. We installed a 5 KW inverter and 6.6 KW of panels. Thanks Supreme Solar Power, for your on site work and for your administration work pre and post. You will not regret using Supreme Solar Power!

    Description

After 10 years of manufacturing exterior cleaning products, we took the advice of our customers, from contractors to home owners and made one supreme cleaning product by blending all of the ingredients together. No longer do you have to worry about what product to use at what time. I took the strongest level of ingredients in each product and added them all together. Now customers can purchase just one product “Wash Safe Oxi-Supreme” and use the power of oxygen, the cleaning strength of hydrogen peroxide and a combination of surfactants that allow the solution to attach to vertical surfaces, drop into horizontal surfaces, penetrate in the substrate of the surface by passing air s to clean better and safer than any cleaning product on the market today.

The production price of this new super product exceeded my boundaries but the results were so extraordinary that I couldn’t risk performance over profit so believe me when I tell you this product is legit it is, it’s everything the combined result of all of my powders should be. Supreme is something you can clean with anywhere inside or outside of your home that you have stains. If the stains are from mold and are the roof, the siding, the sidewalk, the deck, the carpet or your kids stuffed animal, Supreme will clean those stains without ruining the substrate that the mold is on. Supreme will not harm threading, will not stain clothing, will not kill plants, landscaping or grass and guess what? Supreme has NO expiration date so as long as you store it properly you can continue to use it month after month or year after year if you buy like some customers do in the largest 40lb bucket quantities.
