Manufactured in a new facility in California, what sets the Timberline Solar roof system apart from others is that it directly integrates solar technology into traditional roofing processes and materials.

GAF Energy, a provider of solar roofing in North America, announced the launch of Timberline Solar, which the company is calling the world’s first nailable solar shingle.

This week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the Timberline Solar Energy Shingle will receive three awards, including its highest honor, the Best of Innovation award, for ‘Smart Cities.’ The product was also named an Innovation Award honoree in both the ‘Smart Cities’ and ‘Smart Home’ categories.

What sets this apart from other solar shingles, Tesla’s for example, is that the roof system directly integrates solar technology into traditional roofing processes and materials. The shingles will be assembled domestically at GAF Energy’s facility in San Jose, California, which was constructed last year after the company moved manufacturing out of South Korea. At the time the facility was expected to be able to produce 50 MW of solar panels annually, and provide jobs to about 400 people in manufacturing, engineering, and RD.

In an interview with pv magazine, Martin DeBono, GAF Energy’s president, said that RD teams will be a short stroll away from the production line. And while California and Silicon Valley are not known for their low costs, the company chose San Jose for its proximity to a talent pool that is used to innovating for Apple, Google, and others.

GAF Energy reports that Timberline Solar shingles are water-shedding, strong and warranted to withstand winds up to 130 mph. Rack-mounted solar installations require the drilling of dozens of holes into the roof membrane. Any resulting damage related to those holes is not typically covered by roof warranties. GAF Energy is the sister company of GAF, a leading roofing and waterproofing company. With access to GAF’s national contractor network, GAF Energy is uniquely positioned to bring residential solar to the mass market.

“Solar roofs are the future of clean energy, and Timberline Solar is the game-changing innovation that will get us there,” said Martin DeBono, president of GAF Energy.

“Realizing our vision of a breakthrough mass-market solar roof has been our mission since we launched GAF Energy in 2019. What the team has accomplished is nothing short of extraordinary,” said David Winter and David Millstone, co-CEOs of Standard Industries, parent company of GAF Energy.

The Timberline Solar design achieved UL’s 7103 certification, which authorizes GAF Energy to install the system on residential roofs as a roofing product and a solar energy product, the first of its kind to be recognized as both. In addition, GAF Energy worked with Sandia National Laboratories, a U.S. Department of Energy research and development lab, to verify the product’s strength, durability, and overall market-readiness.

GAF Energy to start second solar shingle manufacturing plant in Texas

Local news outlets are reporting that GAF Energy will open a second manufacturing facility in Georgetown, Texas, for its solar shingle product. The city council has approved a development agreement that would allow GAF Energy to build a 450,000-sq.-ft building off I-35, just a half hour from downtown Austin.

GAF Energy says the new manufacturing site would result in 265 jobs over five years in manufacturing, office and RD.

The company released a solar roofing product in January 2022 and has been making the nailable Timberline Solar shingles out of its 50-MW facility in San Jose, California. The California building has been reported to be 112,000 sq. ft.

    energy, launches, timberline, nailable

GAF Energy confirmed that the two facilities combined will be able to produce 300 MW of Timberline Solar shingles.

The Timberline Solar shingle is approximately 64- by 17-in, while the solar portion (one row of 16 half-cut cells that generates 45 W) measures 60- by 7.5-in. That extra non-solar portion is TPO roofing material and is nailed to a roof. GAF Energy is tapping into its 10,000 GAF roofing dealers to install the solar product.

Earlier this year, Solar Power World spoke to Reynolds Holmes, GAF Energy’s VP of services and product management, about the new product.

“You have to design and develop a great product that has an accessible price point, but you also have to build the infrastructure to scale this product,” he said. “The thing we’ve leaned heavily on and made design decisions maybe against being the highest power is making sure it’s installable by this 10,000-strong network. At the end of the day, if you have a great product that meets all needs but there’s no one who can install it, you might as well not have a great product.”

GAF Energy released a press release on the new factory announcement, which is expected to reach full operation by the end of 2023.

“The response from both consumers and roofers to our Timberline Solar roof has been tremendous and we’re thrilled to be expanding capacity to meet that growing demand. Georgetown has a long track record as a clean energy leader, so it is the perfect home for us to build the future of solar,” said Martin DeBono, President of GAF Energy. “We launched Timberline Solar because we believed that more consumers would choose solar if they had a more reliable, durable, and attractive option. The market has confirmed our belief — now we’re turning that belief into reality and building the future of clean energy here in the U.S.”

Roofs are only good for 20-25yrs. Installing these on a existing roof would foolish as the cost to remove and replace them would be prohibitive. I have a ground mount system the panels are 450 watts, these panels are 45 watts each. People really need to due there research.

There are about three houses near me that have the GAF flush roof mount solar PV panel systems and they seem to work well in summer heat as well as snow. The GAF product like the TESLA roofing tile product has a problem with piercings on the roof, wiring into usuable panel strings and feeding the house inverter(s). Still not sure how these tile strips meet RSD requirements under the NEC. Of course if a fireman has to hack through the roof to vent for an attic fire, not sure it would be as simple as replacing the obviously damaged panel strings. The close proximity to the roof may allow stress cracking of solar PV tile cells that were not breached. The racked close mount of framed solar PV panels seems like a better OM prospect over something that may last 30 or more years on one’s roof.

GAF Solar Shingles – Bel Air’s Premier Residential Solar System

GAF Solar Shingles feature superior affordability and cutting-edge technology. That makes these shingles the premier residential solar system for residents in Bel Air or the greater Baltimore area.

Have you been considering solar technology for your roof? Did you know that you have options besides the rack-mounted solar panels offered by solar companies? Keep reading to learn more about integrated roofing systems provided by GAF Energy.

This article will detail GAF Energy’s solar roofing products and why they are a no-brainer for providing reliable solar energy.

What Are GAF Energy’s Integrated Roofing Systems?

GAF Energy has two fantastic solar options for customers. One is an integrated panel system, and the second integrated option has solar technology incorporated into the shingles themselves.

GAF solar products are third-party tested by companies like UL for quality control and are installed by select GAF-certified roofing companies rather than solar companies.

We will look at each of these options from GAF in a little more detail.

    GAF Energy DecoTech

GAF Energy DecoTech is an integrated solar system. That means that instead of solar panels being mounted on racks on top of an existing roof, GAF Solar options are built onto the roof deck.

GAF Energy DecoTech offers solar technology added to a roof with superior waterproofing to traditionally mounted panels. These panels are sleek and low-profile for optimal aesthetics.

    Timberline Solar™ Shingles

Timberline Solar™ Shingles are a new technology that simplifies solar roof installation. Even though GAF Solar Shingles are still rolling out to some parts of the country, these shingles are available in Harford County.

GAF Energy Solar Products are more affordable because roofers with standard roofing equipment install them. On the other hand, most solar products are installed with specialized equipment by a solar company.

Instead of needing a roofing and solar contractor, you just need the roofer!

GAF certifies selected roofing contractors to install their products. This also means that waterproofing and construction are completed by workers who know roofs best.

GAF offers its best warranties to products installed by contractors with certifications unique to its products. When installed by a GAF-certified contractor, the warranty on the solar products matches the warranty for the entire roof.

GAF Energy Is a Dependable Brand

GAF Energy has been a trusted brand in roofing products for 135 years. GAF’s longevity sets them apart in the world of solar residential options.

Since GAF makes more than solar shingles, they have a standing in the roofing market. This allowed GAF to invest in developing solar shingles and supports business longevity. Customers can rest assured that GAF will stick around to honor warranties.

GAF Energy won 2022 Best of Innovation Award for Smart Cities at CES for their unique and cost-saving approach to the solar shingle.

    GAF’s Solar Shingle Competition

We’ll explain why GAF Energy’s solar shingle competition lacks momentum. Many solar-specific companies have risen and fallen over the years despite the popular demand for solar technology for residential roof shingles.

The expensive development costs for solar shingles make it hard for small, new businesses to remain steady. Solar technology has been historically unaffordable to many households, so these fragile companies have small customer bases.

Larger companies like Dow and BP Solar have also sold Solar Shingles but haven’t been able to present reliable and affordable options to the public.

While Tesla’s solar tiles have been available since 2016, the high price point has prevented many homeowners from being able to afford them. GAF Energy has made unprecedented strides in offering affordable solar shingles.

Cost Mitigation for Solar Roofing: Will Solar Shingles Pay for Themselves?

It’s possible, over time, for solar shingles to pay for themselves. There are a couple of ways that shingles save or earn money for homeowners.

    Incentives for Solar Energy

Check with current local, state, and federal incentives for solar products. These change yearly but can help offset the price of investing in solar technology.

    Energy Production

How much energy the roof produces depends on available sunlight. This is impacted by trees and other buildings, the angle of the roof, and the product’s energy production. In turn, this determines the amount saved or earned.

    • Savings: Producing solar energy means a lower or nonexistent power bill.
    • Earnings: Excess Solar energy is purchased from the power company. This is called Net Energy Metering (NEM). The rate and availability of NEM vary from location to location.

Do solar shingles increase your home value?

Solar shingles frequently increase home value because home buyers are willing to pay more for a house with functioning solar shingles than a similar home without. The exact amount varies based on the local market.

Can solar shingles be walked on?

Roofing contractors may step on solar shingles without damaging them. However, homeowners are not advised to walk on rooftops due to safety concerns.

    Raise your home’s resale value

Throughout Long Island, solar roofs are in high demand. Home buyers recognize the many benefits of solar energy—and are willing to pay a premium for a home with them already installed! As a result, many newly constructed homes are being built with this amenity installed by default. Aside from their practicality, solar roofs are sleek and attractive enough to suit today’s most popular curb appeal trends. Some solar roofing options look much like traditional roofing and are difficult to detect from a distance. Others feature an ultra-modern style that many homeowners find desirable. Thanks to a combination of tax credits, rebates, and 0% financing options, installing solar panels or solar shingles is a surprisingly affordable way to increase your home’s resale value.

    Solar Shingle Technology

It’s no wonder that many homeowners don’t favor the idea of installing solar panels on their existing roofs. While solar panels have served as a cost-effective way to generate solar power since 1956, they can be bulky, fragile, and too heavy for some roofs to support safely. Solar panels may also clash with the desired look some homeowners want for their home

If you want to switch to solar energy but you aren’t interested in installing solar panels, solar shingles are an attractive alternative.

Will GAF Energy beat Tesla on integrated solar roofs?

The sister company of roofing giant GAF has sector-spanning smarts and thousands of installs to date.

SAN JOSE. California — GAF Energy has installed several thousand integrated solar roofs. That’s more than Tesla Energy has installed despite the ambitious promises of its CEO. Elon Musk. In fact, GAF Energy President Martin DeBono believes that his company’s just-launched photovoltaic roof shingle design positions it to solarize millions of residential roofs.

“ What we’ve built is a nailable solar shingle that goes on as fast or faster than a regular shingle, looks great and generates electricity,” said DeBono, who spoke with Canary Media during this reporter’s recent visit to the company’s new 50.megawatt-capacity, 112. 000.square-foot manufacturing facility in San Jose, California.

GAF Energy is a Standard Industries company and sister company to GAF. one of the world’s largest roofing companies. GAF manufactures asphalt shingles as well as roofing materials such as thermoplastic polyolefin ( TPO ), polyvinyl chloride ( PVC ) and underlayments.

Standard Industries businesses include operating companies GAF. BMI. Grace, Siplast, Schiedel and SGI. as well as Standard Investments and Winter Properties. Forbes ranks Standard as No. 65 on its list of America’s largest private companies.

    Disrupting the roofing industry

“ Technology has ripped apart every industry, and technology is going to change roofing. We’re the largest roofing manufacturer in the world; either we’re going to go disrupt the roofing industry ourselves or someone else will,” said DeBono.

The CEO contrasted the traditional solar mounting process — solar panels installed on racking secured by drilling through the roof and “ trying to hit a rafter” — with the GAF Energy product, “ a shingle that is lapped, installed and booked just like any other shingle would be in order to create a waterproof barrier.”

DeBono said GAF developed the product by thinking like a roofing company, not a solar company, building a roofing product that happens to have solar capabilities. He said the roofing industry is 20 times larger than the rooftop solar business and has an enormous advantage in scale.

Residential solar installations exceeded 130. 000 systems in the U.S. last quarter, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association, while more than 5 million new roofs are installed on U.S. homes each year, according to DeBono, who also said that GAF commands a 25 percent share of the U.S. roofing market.

For a traditional solar company, the process of customer acquisition is the most expensive part of a residential solar system, costing far more per watt than the solar panels themselves. DeBono estimates that customer-acquisition costs for roofers are “ typically less than 500. compared to 3. 000 to 5. 000 for a solar roof.”

DeBono said GAF Energy is making it easier to complete the electrical connections by placing the electronics and wiring on the top side of its shingles. “ GAF Energy does all the electrical services. The roofer does the roof, and at a later date, the GAF Energy employee will come and install the inverter and finish the electrical run,” he said.

“ As the manufacturer of both the solar and the shingle itself, we want to make sure that it’s done correctly if we’re going to be on the hook for a 25.year warranty,” he said.

Installation time is one to three days, according to DeBono, which compares favorably to the weeks-long construction process often needed to install a Tesla solar roof (despite that company’s repeated insistence that it takes only five to seven business days).

    Get Caught Up

Can the US manufacture enough solar panels to meet its surging demand?

“ Because it’s built as a roofing product, it has to meet roofing standards. It has to be able to be submerged in water; it has to be able to withstand hail; it has a Class A fire rating — all standards that a solar panel does not need to meet but a roof does,” said DeBono.

    It’s a roof and it’s BIPV

GAF Energy’s solar roofing system is a type of building-integrated photovoltaics, known as BIPV. Bunea said, “ It’s a roof and it’s BIPV. so when we are certifying, we have to certify in both worlds. We have roofing industry standards as well as BIPV standards.”

She added, “ The testing agencies have become smarter about building-integrated photovoltaics.”

In September 2021. GAF Energy’s solar shingle achieved UL ’s 7103 certification, which authorizes the company to install its system on residential roofs as a roofing product and a solar energy product — the first product to be recognized as both, according to GAF Energy.

There’s huge potential for the product. Americans want solar on their homes. Even as the pandemic persisted, residential solar deployment in the U.S. was up 21 percent in 2021 compared to the previous year, reaching a record 3. 9 gigawatts, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association.

    BIPV is a tough business

But GAF Energy has some competition. In addition to Tesla, there are a number of BIPV designers and installers operating today, including ArteZanos, Atum, CertainTeed, Forward, Heliatek, Lumeta, SunTegra, Ubiquitous Energy and Viridian Solar.

There is also a long list of less-than-successful BIPV efforts.

But GAF Energy’s parent company is fully behind its lofty aims.

“ Realizing our vision of a breakthrough mass-market solar roof has been our mission since we launched GAF Energy in 2019 ,” said David Winter and David Millstone, co-CEOs of Standard Industries, in a press release.

DeBono notes that unlike the offerings of some other high-profile vendors, “ The product is available today; it’s not vaporware.” He adds, “ Our mission is energy from every roof, starting with composite shingle roofs.”

Correction: This story initially reported that GAF Energy’s mono PERC solar cells are domestically manufactured. In fact, they are manufactured overseas, not in the U.S. (though not in China).
