    FAQ

SMA EV Charger was developed for use with the Sunny Home Manager 2.0. This configuration also allows you to use intelligent charging management. However, even without the Sunny Home Manager 2.0, SMA EV Charger can be used as a standard wallbox and easily integrated into a PV system later on.

When setting up the system, simply deselect the option “operation with grid-connection point meter”. Note, however, that visualization in the Sunny Portal and SMA Energy app and all the functions that come with SMA Energy System Home are available only in conjunction with the Sunny Home Manager 2.0.

In principle, SMA EV Charger can also be operated in combination with the Sunny Home Manager BT, but with some restrictions: For example, SMA EV Charger does not appear in the device overview in the Sunny Portal; the control steps are much bigger; no events are transported to the system logbook; SMA Smart Connected is not available; visualization and control via the SMA Energy app are not possible. Forecast-based charging then has to be configured indirectly using the parameter settings on the device’s user interface. If you want to make full use of the intelligent charging options, you should thus consider using the Sunny Home Manager 2.0.

With software update 1.02.23.R for the SMA EV Charger, up to three SMA EV Chargers are now supported on one Sunny Home Manager 2.0 (≥ 2.08.5.R) in multi-EVS mode. This will allow the SMA EV Chargers to be visualized and controlled via the SMA Energy app.

The 5 m charging cable supplied as standard is too short for my application. Does SMA also offer longer charging cables?

Charging cables of 7.5 m and 10.0 m in length have been available as options since August 2021. Installers can order the cables as spare parts through the SMA Online Shop and retrofit them to existing systems. System operators should contact their installers directly, as the SMA Online Shop is intended for use by solar power professionals only.

SMA EV Charger has two switch positions, but offers three different charging modes. How can I switch between them?

You can switch between fast charging and optimized charging using the rotary switch on the SMA EV Charger enclosure. Note, however, that you cannot configure fast charging mode via the SMA Energy app. If you set the rotary switch to the optimized switch position, SMA EV Charger will begin PV-optimized charging by default. Alternatively, you can then set a desired charging target via the SMA Energy app.

The documentation contains frequent references to the “slider.” Where can I find this, and what does it do?

You can find the “slider” in the Sunny Portal by choosing load characteristics optional energy requirements. In optimized charging mode, your electric vehicle will be charged with the minimum share of solar energy for SMA EV Charger. Depending on how your system is configured, for example, you should allow 20% grid-supplied power to ensure that the Sunny Home Manager 2.0 also performs scheduling for small PV systems or can take into account variable weather conditions. Rather than a static value, this figure is more of a target that the Sunny Home Manager 2.0 will aim to achieve throughout the day.

I have configured the slider for SMA EV Charger in the Sunny Portal for 100% PV power generation, but the SMA Energy app still shows only a small amount of grid-supplied power. Why is this?

The Sunny Home Manager 2.0 regulates SMA EV Charger at one-minute intervals. Especially when conditions are variable, this may result in a discrepancy with respect to the actual level of PV power generation. So even if you have set 100% power generation, it is still possible that only a small amount of charging power is actually drawn from the utility grid. In addition, planning is done by the Sunny Home Manager 2.0 based on a schedule (hypothesis). Regular changes due to unforeseen events are absolutely normal.

What are the different sources of energy used for charging my vehicle in the different charging modes?

During fast charging, the vehicle is charged with the maximum power that the vehicle and house allow. Any energy source is used here, so the system could potentially be drawing power from the home storage system to charge your vehicle.

During PV-optimized charging, SMA EV Charger charges the vehicle with the energy mix saved in the Sunny Portal (slider). Charging of battery prior to optional loads checkmark decides whether the battery or OPTIONAL load is supplied with the surplus solar power initially. Depending on how the slider is set, energy from the home storage system or utility grid can also be used to charge the vehicle.

During forecast-based charging, surplus solar energy is initially used for achieving the charging target configured in the SMA Energy app. If not enough of this energy is available for achieving the charging target, the home storage system is used. Once the home storage system is used up, the energy is drawn from the utility grid.

SMA EV Charger is designed for unidirectional AC charging of the electric vehicle in accordance with IEC 61851-1. Bidirectional DC charging at home is therefore not possible. This is prevented in particular by regulatory conditions. In addition, the galvanic isolation prescribed by the applicable standards results in high original costs for charging solutions. Vehicle manufacturers are increasingly offering vehicle models with communication in accordance with ISO 15118, thereby potentially enabling bidirectional applications. SMA is monitoring developments in this area with great interest.

SMA EV Charger 22 is eligible for funding. When setting up your system, the solar power professional has to limit the device to a charging power of 11 kW (see manufacturer’s declaration the product page download area). In addition, all the power for charging the electric vehicle has to come from renewable energies. This can be demonstrated by either concluding a green electricity contract (e.g., SMA JOIN) or submitting a self-declaration that the vehicle is charged exclusively using self-generated solar power. Once your request has been approved by the KfW, you have to install your system within nine months and submit the necessary documentation.

My SMA EV Charger does not begin charging until a large amount of surplus power is available. The vehicle is not charged if only a small amount of surplus photovoltaic power is available. Why might this be?

When SMA EV Charger is installed, it is vital that the charging cable supplied is connected as shown in our manual. If the lines are not connected as shown there, single-phase charging cannot start. Three-phase charging begins only when a large amount of surplus power is available. The charging cable must be installed only by an electrically qualified person.

I have restricted SMA EV Charger to 11 kW. Why doesn’t it perform single-phase charging with more than 3.5 kW now?

This is because the maximum charging power of the SMA EV Charger is currently restricted based on current. When restricted to 11 kW, the maximum charging current of the device is 16 A. To prevent the device’s fuse protection level being exceeded, single-phase charging of the vehicle will not exceed 3.5 kW either.

With software update 1.02.23.R, single-phase charging at up to 7.4 kW is possible even if the SMA EV Charger is restricted to 11 kW, provided that the electrical installation permits (e.g., line cross-section, fuse protection). The fuse protection of the electric circuit for the SMA EV Charger is the determining factor in this case (see AC current restriction parameter).

The SoC of the vehicle battery is not transmitted to the vehicle via PWM communication (pulse width modulation) as standard during charging in accordance with IEC 61851-1. The SMA EV Charger therefore has no current information on the state of charge of the vehicle battery and cannot use this information to optimize energy management.

Can the charger read the state of charge (SOC) of the connected vehicle via powerline communication (PLC)?

No, because there is no standard transmission of the SoC via PWM communication (pulse width modulation) from the vehicle to the charging station.

EV Bidirectional Chargers: The New Wallbox Quasar 2

Inflation, rising utility bills, and 5.00 premium gasoline are contributing to the popularity of residential solar energy and a doubling of EV sales in the U.S. in Q1, 2022. The invasion of Ukraine, the pandemic, and climate-related extreme events have conspired to increase energy and fuel costs, causing drivers’ frustration at the pump and homeowner’s angst regarding dependence on public utilities and home safety.

Automakers have responded to the sea-change in consumer demand with a deluge of new EV models, from the Lucid Air and Mercedes-Benz EQE to the Audi E-Tron, the Rivian, and the Cadillac Lyriq. While manufacturers have reduced their overall TV advertising budgets in 2022, EV advertising has increased fourfold. One of the more compelling new EV ads features the soon-to-be-released Ford F-150 Lightning with the potential to address each of these concerns, the price of gasoline, rising utility costs, and backup electricity during a power outage – brilliant!

How does Ford’s electric pickup truck accomplish all of this – due to its bidirectional charging capability. This article explains bidirectional charging, which facilitates V2G, V2H, and V2L, and introduces Wallbox, the company responsible for the versatile new Quasar 2 Bidirectional EV charger – also brilliant!

What is an EV Bidirectional Charger

The bi-directional charger is a relatively new technology that allows an EV to send energy back to your home (V2H – vehicle-to-home), to the grid (V2G – vehicle-to-grid), or to another electrical device (V2L – vehicle-to-load) as well as receive energy from an electrical source, including solar. Examples of V2L functionality might include an electric scooter, lawnmower, or electric bike.

With a bidirectional charger, your EV charging goes both ways; electricity flows from the grid into your vehicle and can be routed back to your home, the grid, or another device. In addition, the V2H feature enables you to use your EV like a home battery system to store excess solar energy. A fully charged vehicle with a typical EV capacity of 65kWh could support the average home for several days – longer when paired with rooftop solar.

    Uses of a Bidirectional Charger – V2H

The obvious application for V2H is in the event of a power outage, brownouts, rolling blackouts, or another natural disaster. Your vehicle supplements or replaces your solar battery system and renders a generator redundant. Like a solar battery system, the V2H functionality reduces grid dependency and can save on home energy costs. If energy rates are too high during peak hours, simply charge your vehicle during off-peak hours, then use that energy during peak hours to power your home.

    Uses of a Bidirectional Charger – V2L

With V2L, you can power other electric devices external to your car, using your vehicle versus energy from the grid. In addition to the previously cited examples, V2L is ideal for camping equipment, powering tools at remote locations, or emergency situations. Now your EV batteries power your vehicle’s motors, but they can also power much more.

    Uses of a Bidirectional Charger – V2G

V2G or vehicle-to-grid is designed to export energy back to the electrical grid. As the technology becomes more prevalent and utilities develop their policies, you may be able to send energy back to the grid for discounts on your energy bill.

importantly, the V2G function could play a key role during periods when grid demand is very high. As stated, EVs have large batteries, and the combined power of many vehicles routing energy back to the grid could be impactful. Recently, Porsche conducted a V2G pilot program, pooling multiple Taycan’s sending power back to the grid. The pilot proved the benefits of V2G technology and its potential to transform the methods to store and generate energy.

    EVs Offering Bidirectional Charging

Although Ford’s F-150 Lightning is the EV best known for its bidirectional capability, other manufacturers have integrated the feature into their models. However, since bidirectional is a relatively new concept, not all EV automakers have done so yet. Below is a list of those models that have:

bidirectional, chargers, wallbox, quasar, solar, charging
    • Audi E-Tron
    • BMW i3 – although not yet available in the U.S.
    • Chevy Bolt
    • Ford Lightning – not available on the Mustang Mach E or the Ford E-Transit
    • GMC Hummer – coming in 2024
    • Hyundai Ioniq 5
    • Kia Soul
    • Kia Niro
    • Lucid Air
    • Mitsubishi Outlander
    • Nissan LEAF
    • Nissan e-NV200 (van)
    • Rivian Pickup Truck – promising bi-directional charging
    • Volvo – starting with the successor to the XC90
    • VW ID.4
    • Tesla has not ventured into the bidirectional charger system yet, perhaps because it is seen as a conflict with its Powerwall battery.

In conjunction with the F-150, Ford introduced its Home Integration System and Ford Intelligent Backup Power for at-home charging, compatible with a solar energy system. This system, exclusively engineered for the Lightning, is the perfect way for you to control your home’s power. That is, if you’re one of the lucky 200,000 who has already made your reservation and placed a deposit on Ford’s EV pickup. Ford has since stopped taking reservations, and even those with a reservation (refundable) aren’t guaranteed vehicle delivery. They’ll need to place an order with a local dealer, but Ford hasn’t said how many Lightnings it plans to build in 2022. Industry experts believe that Ford may build as many as 80,000 in 2023 after initially targeting just 40,000 vehicles annually. It sounds like it may be a long wait to get behind the wheel of Ford’s newest pickup truck.

Fortunately, other companies have innovated and are bringing bidirectional chargers to market.

The Ocular IQ can charge using solar panels to decrease your charging costs and utilise green energy to charge your electric car. Solar charging your electric car in multiple modes with any solar panel or invertor brand

The system works by using CT clamps to measure the solar generation of the home and then match the charging speed to take advantage of solar rather than exporting to the grid.

This essentially allows your vehicle battery to become a solar sponge and importantly reduces your cost of charging.

For battery health the system will always deliver a minimum of 6A to prevent the charging session turning on and off excessively to optimise battery health.

    Safe – Power Balancing

The Ocular IQ has energy balancing for energy restricted homes especially in the hot Australian summer. The Ocular IQ senses energy limitations in your home and adjust your charging speed to avoid overloading your electrical supply.

Utilising CT clamps the Ocular IQ senses a home’s available electricity. It can read the incoming feed to the building, take into account the building energy usage and calculate a final amount of power that is then distributed to the charger.

The IQ Solar reads the power feed every second and reduces the power output when other home appliances, such as a water heater, air condition systems are turned on. Once the water heater is turned off, the charger will automatically read the available power and increase the power output to the maximum available level. This gives you the maximum charging speed without tripping your homes power.

CLEVER SOLAR MANAGEMENT FOR PROBLEM-FREE PV CHARGING

    Smart, ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY, COST-EFFICIENT

You own a PV system or want to buy one? You have an electric vehicle, but not yet the right wallbox for energy- and cost-efficient charging? You do now.

May we introduce? Our Amperfied Wallbox connect.solar.

You can integrate it quickly and easily into your existing photovoltaic system. The solar management system integrated from Q4/2023 adapts the charging power to the current energy production of your PV system, you avoid drawing from the grid and thus reduce the costs for charging your electric vehicle.

Do you have a Home Energy Management System (HEMS)? Here, too, the connection is possible without any problems in order to charge cost-efficiently, independently and in an environmentally friendly way.

    Technical highlights

available via SW update as of Q4/2023 available separately

How to charge your electric car with solar power

    • your PV system
    • your Amperfied Wallbox connect.solar
    • and a meter (Smart meter) that measures the flow of electricity.
    • Manual charging: You identify the PV surplus via the inverter of the solar system or our app and set the charging process to the estimated PV surplus via the app.
    • Predefined charging: You define a threshold value at which your wallbox automatically starts the charging process. For example, you can set the charging process to start only when a PV surplus of 3 kW is produced.
    • Dynamic charging: You use an intelligent control system that detects the current flow at the meter and continuously adjusts the charging power of the Wallbox to the current PV surplus. For example, you can set that 70 % of the PV surplus is always used for charging.

    Integrated, clever phase switching

What happens when it is cloudy, the evening hours are approaching and the solar yield is not so high? Do you then have to resort to expensive grid electricity?

No, you don’t have to. Thanks to our integrated, clever phase switching. The integrated solar management and external power meter check whether the power requirement of the electric vehicle is covered with three phases and without additional mains supply. If the solar yield is below 4.4 kW, the Wallbox automatically and dynamically switches to single-phase charging.

Your electric car can then be charged with a surplus power of 1.4 kW. The charging process will then take a little longer, but you will always make full use of the available solar power.

Scenario involving integrated solar management system and external Amperfied PowerMeter

The external Amperfied PowerMeter measures the power generated by the PV system. If the PV system is producing enough power to charge the electric vehicle using three phases, phase changeover is not required. As soon as the generated power no longer suffices for three-phase charging, the integrated solar management system automatically switches to single-phase charging. This charges the electric vehicle without drawing additional power from the grid, reducing the costs for charging the vehicle.

Scenario involving control via an existing Home Energy Management System

Depending on the momentary internal consumption and the PV surplus, an HEMS decides which household consumers receive the self-generated power. The HEMS can also control phase changeover for the Wallbox. The available functions depend on the HEMS used.

WHY CHARGING WITH SELF-GENERATED SOLAR POWER IS WORTHWHILE

    You protect the environment

The electricity from PV systems is 100% renewable and does not cause any CO₂ emissions. CO₂ is only produced during the manufacture of the system components of a photovoltaic system. However, these emissions can be quickly offset by the subsequent production of completely green electricity.

The Federal Environment Agency has calculated that a photovoltaic system avoids almost 700 grams of CO₂ per kilowatt hour of electricity over its entire lifetime compared to conventional electricity. According to a study by the Fraunhofer Institute, this saved a net 34.9 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in 2020.

Furthermore, the Federal Environment Agency states that photovoltaic systems in Germany pay for themselves in terms of energy after one to two years. After this time, the system has produced as much energy as must be spent on production, operation and disposal. Conventional energy generation plants using fossil fuels, on the other hand, never pay for themselves in terms of energy, since more energy is used in operation than can be used.

    You are independent save money.

Power failure? No problem. A photovoltaic system produces electricity independently of the power grid and, with an emergency power function included in the electricity storage unit, can continue to supply electricity even in the event of a power failure. In addition, you remain unaffected by future energy price developments on the world markets and save even more money in the long run. The sun does not raise prices.

Of course, you have acquisition costs that are often not exactly cheap. But if you take the purchase price of the PV system and divide it by the total expected electricity production, you often get a notional price of between 10 and 16 cents per kWh calculated over 20 years, according to Finanztip.de. This value is called the electricity production costs.

For one kilowatt hour of grid electricity, on the other hand, you pay around 47 cents per kilowatt hour, according to the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW) as of April 2023.

    zappi

You don’t need solar panels or a wind power system to use the zappi. But purchasing it today, means you’re future fit for tomorrow.

zappi is an EV charger with a difference. zappi can operate as a standard home car charger, using power from the grid. It also has optional charging modes which use 100% green energy generated from your own home Solar PV system or wind generation.

    Three EV charging modes

zappi provides you with tailor made charging to suit your lifestyle and demands. Whether you need a “fast” charge to get you going in a hurry, or are happy to wait for your charge to take place using 100% renewable energy. zappi gives you the flexibility to charge on your terms.

The eco charge mode is a mixture of both green energy and energy imported from the grid. eco mode minimises the use of grid power, generally taking advantage of cheaper rates overnight, but can also charge using 100% green energy. Essentially giving you the ability to charge up your car for free! The charging power is continuously adjusted in response to changes in generation or power being used elsewhere in the home.

If the surplus generation drops below 1.4kWh some power will be drawn from the grid to top it back up.

eco charging is very similar to eco charging in that it can utilise power from the grid or your own power source. However the charge power is continuously adjusted in response to changes in generation or power consumption elsewhere in the home. Your electric car charging will pause if there is too much-imported power, continuing only when there is surplus free power available.

In fast mode, your vehicle will be charged at maximum power. This power can come from a renewable energy source or simply from the grid. The cost of charging an electric car also depends on numerous factors including mode and the car itself.

If you don’t have solar panels or wind generation, zappi will charge just like an ordinary Mode 3 charging point.

    Set timers

At certain hours ‘time of use energy tariffs’ are significantly cheaper. With zappi, you can use the ‘boost timer’ option to start charging at times with the lowest rates. It’s a cost-saving charging alarm clock for your EV!

    No earth rod

zappi is the only EV charger with built-in PEN fault technology. It’s the safest choice for an electric car charger, eliminating the need to install additional earth rods means no extra costs an easy install.

    PV charging

zappi works in harmony with your Solar PV or wind generation, meaning you can charge your car using green energy for free. If you haven’t got a renewable energy source at home, zappi works just like any other charger in ‘fast mode’.

zappi utilises your self generated power for EV charging

A solar EV charger works by allowing you to use excess solar to power up your car. Generating solar energy requires solar panels (PV) to be fitted to your home or place of work, but the energy generated through the solar panels is totally free, essentially giving you free miles! Light energy produced by the sun is called a photon. It is the most basic, fundamental particle of all light. It is these photons in natural daylight that are converted by solar panel cells to produce electricity. This small bundle of electromagnetic energy is constantly in motion. Simply put, a solar panel works by allowing photons, or particles of light, to bounce into electrons, setting them free from atoms, generating a flow of electricity.

Our eco technology makes intelligent decisions based on your self generated power and the energy tariff you are signed up to. This allows your myenergi devices to optimise for drawing energy from the grid at the lowest possible rate per kWh.
