Enphase and Semper Solaris team up for residential solar in California
Semper Solaris will install Enphase’s IQ microinverters and batteries. The microinverters have the ability to island the home off-grid in the case of a power outage.

Enphase Energy announced it reached a partnership with installer Semper Solaris in which its IQ microinverters and home batteries will be deployed throughout the state of California.
Enphase started shipping the IQ8 microinverters in December. IQ8 gained attention for their ability to form a microgrid during a power outage. The devices limit energy capture to just what the home is consuming, so if the grid goes out, the IQ8 automatically switches between on or off-grid.
The Enphase Energy System with IQ8 comes in four different configurations: “Solar Only”; “Sunlight Backup” with no battery and the addition of IQ Load Controller to only support essential loads during an outage; “Home Essentials Backup” with a small battery; and “Full Energy Independence” with a large battery. While the first configuration is a standard grid-tied system, the remaining configurations are grid-agnostic systems that need the Enphase IQ System Controller 2 (formerly called Enpower Smart switch) to island the home during an outage.
The IQ8 family includes five types of software-defined microinverters, IQ8, IQ8, IQ8M, IQ8A, and IQ8H, with peak output AC power of 245VA, 300VA, 330VA, 366VA, and 384VA, respectively. Enphase reports that the IQ8H microinverter is its most powerful microinverter to date and has a California Energy Commission (CEC) efficiency of 97%. The multiple types of IQ8 enable seamless pairing with a full range of solar modules, up to 540W DC.
“We began piloting the product in the third quarter of 2021 with select installers and the feedback has been great. Homeowners not only get backup power with sunlight, but also have the flexibility to add more solar or batteries in the future as their needs change,” said Badri Kothandaraman, president and CEO of Enphase Energy.
Semper Solaris plans to use Enphase’s proposal and permitting services. Enphase said it plans to build on the partnership and create a fully integrated digital platform, integrating additional services like operation and maintenance.
“We have seen an incredible surge in demand from our customers for backup power and expect this trend to continue to increase as the push for electrification grows,” said John Almond, CEO of Semper Solaris. “There will be significant strain on our aging energy infrastructure, forcing us to rethink the way we generate and deliver energy to California households.”

Nonrenewable energy sources are typically concentrated in specific geographical regions, making them more abundant in certain countries than others. Conversely, sunshine and wind are accessible to every nation.
Solar Energy
Solar, or photovoltaic (PV), cells are typically composed of silicon or other materials that directly convert sunlight into electricity. Distributed solar systems generate electricity locally, either through rooftop panels or community projects that power entire neighborhoods.
Wind Energy
Wind energy has transcended the rudimentary windmills of yesteryears. Today, towering turbines, reaching skyscraper heights and sporting immense diameters, stand resolutely across the globe. The movement of the wind turns the turbine blades, driving an electric generator to produce electricity.
Alternative Energy Sources Worth Exploring
On a national and international scale, large hydroelectric plants, also known as mega-dams, are often considered nonrenewable energy sources. Mega-dams alter and diminish natural water flows, impeding the movement of animal and human populations reliant on these rivers. Small hydroelectric plants, with installed capacities below approximately 40 megawatts, can be managed carefully to minimize environmental damage, as they divert only a fraction of the water flow.
Biomass Energy
over, there are negative repercussions for biodiversity. Nevertheless, specific forms of biomass energy can serve as low-carbon alternatives under appropriate circumstances. For instance, sawdust and chips from sawmills, which would otherwise decompose rapidly and release carbon, can be utilized as a low-carbon energy source.
Geothermal Energy
The hot underground water brought to the surface, known as hydrothermal resources, is then channelled through a turbine to generate electricity. Geothermal power plants typically have low emissions when they return the steam and water used back into the reservoir. It is possible to construct geothermal plants in areas lacking underground reservoirs; however, there are concerns that this method may heighten the risk of earthquakes in regions already deemed geological hot spots.
Ocean Energy
Although tidal and wave energy technologies are still in the developmental phase, the moon’s gravitational pull consistently governs the ocean, rendering the harnessing of its power an enticing prospect. Some tidal energy methods, such as tidal barrages, which function similarly to dams and are situated in ocean bays or lagoons, can pose threats to wildlife. Wave power relies on structures resembling dams or devices anchored to the ocean floor just below the water’s surface.
Renewable Energy at Home
On a smaller scale, homeowners can leverage the sun’s rays to power their entire houses, employing either PV cell panels or passive solar home design. Passive solar homes are specifically designed to welcome sunlight through south-facing Windows and subsequently retain the warmth using materials like concrete, bricks, and tiles that store heat.
Certain solar-powered homes generate surplus electricity, enabling homeowners to sell the excess power back to the grid. Additionally, batteries provide an economically feasible means to store excess solar energy for nighttime use. Ongoing scientific advancements aim to integrate form and function, exemplified by solar Windows and roof shingles.
Geothermal Heat Pumps
Geothermal technology offers a fresh take on a familiar process. The coils at the back of refrigerators operate as miniature heat pumps, extracting heat from the interior to maintain cool and fresh food. In homes, geothermal or geo-exchange pumps exploit the constant temperature of the Earth, a few feet below the surface, to cool residences in summer, warm them in winter, and even heat water.
Although installing geothermal systems can be initially costly, they generally provide a return on investment within 5 to 10 years. over, they operate more quietly, entail fewer maintenance issues, and have a longer lifespan compared to traditional air conditioners.
Small Wind Systems
Utilizing small wind turbines has become commonplace not only for boats and ranchers but also for cell phone companies and homeowners. Wind turbine dealers now assist homeowners in siting, installing, and maintaining wind turbines, although some do-it-yourself enthusiasts choose to install the turbines themselves. The viability of a wind turbine for reducing reliance on the electrical grid depends on factors such as electricity needs, local wind speeds, and zoning regulations.
Semper Solaris Review
Semper Solaris is a large-sized solar panel installation company with its head office in El Cajon, California, and another 14 offices spanning the same state and one apiece in Texas and Florida. The company opened its doors in 2012 and has a projected annual revenue of 99 million. Apart from solar panel installation, Semper Solaris also handles roofing services, battery storage, and heating and air condition system installations.
Semper Solaris focuses on residential projects via grid-tied or hybrid systems for its solar energy services. Though most appear positive in terms of online reviews, there are quite a few negative ones that are hard to ignore. It is BBB accredited and has over 500 reviews, with ratings mostly in the five-star section.
The company is co-owned by former US Marine Captain Kelly Shawhan and John Almond. Semper Solaris offers a variety of solar panels from manufacturers around the globe as well as local ones. This allows customers to choose which type of solar panel they want if they wish to FOCUS on cost, efficiency, or both.

Semper Solaris offers residential grid-tied systems as well as hybrid systems. The hybrid system is when a battery storage unit is installed but can sell excess energy back to the grid whenever required. Semper Solaris’ approach sets the system to sell power back at peak times, ensuring the highest return possible for clients opting for this approach.
Semper Solaris also provides efficient heating and air conditioning units that pair perfectly with solar energy installations.

Semper Solaris’ average installation cost is approximately 12,100, below that of many competitors. However, it’s worth keeping in mind that each solar project is unique and will differ in expense.

Maintenance
Semper Solaris, on its website, states that should any issues develop on one of its installations, its first response is to troubleshoot with the client over the phone. If that proves unsuccessful, the next step is to send a technician to the property by the next day. Though different warranties are available, the one for solar panels is 25 years.
If under warranty, defective panels can be replaced free of charge, and the same goes for any repairs needed. For a fee, Semper Solaris can also send out a maintenance team to handle the potential upkeeping of a solar energy system.
While there are plenty of positive reviews about Semper Solaris in general and for after-sales service, there are also quite a few negative ones. Reviews swing across both ends of the spectrum, with some people describing it as “wonderful,” “skilled,” and “the best company.” In contrast, others denounced it as “incompetent,” “non-responsive,” and “unethical.”
Customer Service (Review Analysis)
Overall, Semper Solaris can be classified as a good company, given its 4.6-star rating across over 350 reviews. However, given the diversity of reviews, it would be good to delve deeper into people’s good and bad experiences with this company.
One of the positive reviews explained how the customer needed a new roof and solar energy system and opted for Semper Solaris. The company’s senior energy consultant took the time to explain in great detail the next steps that would be required. The roof took a week to install, while the panels took a day. The customer noted that both installation crews were.
On the negative side, a customer review described the experience as a “nightmare” lasting from February to August, citing “horrid communication” as just the tip of the iceberg. Allegedly, one of Semper Solaris’ employees visited the customer’s property without prior notice while the client was out of town and accidentally left the client’s system offline for over two weeks. Several calls, texts, and e-mails later, most of which the customer says were unanswered, Semper Solaris eventually sent someone to fix the issue.
The customer also mentioned that there were still some persistent issues, but inconsistent communication prevented them from being solved.
The SolarEmpower View
Semper Solaris is a highly legitimate company that seeks to support veterans, students, military personnel, and service people across various initiatives. It offers multiple solar panels to choose from and can even tune-up existing installations, even if not Semper Solaris’ work.
The only downside is that a fair few negative reviews bring down the company’s score a little bit. Additionally, Semper Solaris scores highly across various metrics, including transparency and average installation costs.

Semper Solaris Reviews
For the second time in two years my inverter has gone out. The first time I was unaware that I would not be notified by the company if anything breaks-I lost a month and a half of prime summer solar. I check my production myself regularly now and realized my solar had stopped working AGAIN. After being bounced around from person to person for two weeks and being told to turn it off and turn it back on several times, someone finally called back to schedule a tech to come out. Apparently the soonest they can come is in a month, and that is only to determine what’s wrong! I am going to lose an entire summer of solar production. When I stated this they were completely unapologetic and just said that they are very busy with repairs and did I want the appointment or not. They said if I didn’t accept this timeline then quote “you are going to have to wait even longer.” My system cost 22,000 and is supposed to have a warranty for 25 years on all parts. What good is this so called amazing warranty if the system goes down all the time and the company refuses to come and fix the problem.

There is too much to write here. but steer clear of this company!
There is too much to write here, but suffice it to say that Semper did not deliver on ANY of their promises, they had poor communication and never reached out to us without us prompting the communication. Our job was completed on 2/23, and the inspections all done with a week or so. Then Semper submitted TWO applications so SCE didn’t know what to do with it and then a month later, Semper sends a new application. Semper kept telling us they couldn’t get any information from SCE, but we were able to get information from them about the fiasco in the submissions (something Semper NEVER disclosed to us, even though we were asking for updates regularly). SCE stated we would probably be turned on by the first of May but then SCE had to reach back out to Semper for justification as to why my 1650 sq ft house required 42 panels (we have a large tree). So Semper sends an Equipment change request to SCE on 4/29/23 and the clock starts over now with the power company. Why Semper didn’t realize they would need substantiation is beyond me. It’s not the first time they’ve had to do something like this, I’m sure. And it makes me definitely question if they lied to us about how many panels we needed to purchase.
They sloppily submitted our PTO to SCE and it has now cost us an extra TWO MONTHS, and it will be at least another 45-60 days based on what SCE told me today when I called. Do you think Semper at ANY time in all of this has ever tried to stay on top of it or provide updates? Nope. They have gone totally silent because they are sick of hearing from us, I’m sure. They do not follow through on anything. The actual workmanship is great, but the service from the company itself is the worst of any I’ve experienced or heard about. The fact they use the military as a pull for customers who are supportive (as are we) of the military is disgusting to me. We were told over and over that they run their company like a military unit. precise, on top of everything, accountability for everything they do, communication top priority. Unfortunately they do not hold to any of those traits. We are now approaching the hottest time of the year in central CA, where our SCE bills run 800-1000 for three to four months. We contracted with them 8 months ago so that we would be completed far in advance of the summer season. Now we are paying on a 92,000 loan for something that doesn’t even work yet. So we are paying 313 a month along with a full SCE electric bill until the system is turned on. We will be expecting Semper to reimburse us for all charges we have had to pay in excess of the 313 loan payment until our system is functional. Do we think they will do the right thing? No, unfortunately we do not. If you value getting things done right, you should definitely look for a different company.

My roof has given me constant leak…
My roof has given me constant leak problems and is only 5 years oldSemper subcontract their roof jobs to others and the quality is suspect.The latest issue is to replace all the ridge shingles because of water damage to my ceilings.Now they will not reply to any service requests despite me having WARRANTY BY SEMPER SOLARISWhen they did come out they damaged my gutters because they didn’t use gutter protectors when placing their ladders.So I would NOT RECOMMEND Semper Solaris for roofing.

It started out great
It started out great! Great sales person, answered all our questions. Installation was good, technicians were very courteous and careful. That’s where it ended being good and went to terrible. Our system which includes solar panels and batteries has not worked correctly in 2 months, it was installed in December, it is now February. Customer Service is unresponsive. We are so disappointed and frustrated.

Poor performance and deceiving company
Every experience with this company was awful. I initially install with them, now wanted to upgrade, and I never can get same answer. I am so sorry I install system through them. They are unprofessional, unreliable, and all negative reviews about them are true. Go with someone else, or you will e in hell experiencing worst of all of them with impossible performance and reliability. Oh and by the way they false advertise they are upgrading to IQ8 micro inverters, I hope someone will sue them for false advertisement.

AWFUL, DISORGANIZED, INCOMPETENT (2.5 yr disaster)
Work with literally anyone else. I engaged Semper to install batteries and hook up existing solar panels I already had on my roof. This took them 2.5 years. I spoke to literally 30 people over the course of the project, none of whom had any idea what was going on at any point. They failed inspection 3x. They installed a safety bollard in the middle of my garage turning it into a 1-car garage which obviously doesn’t work.
The cherry on top was that they reviewed my account and attributed this disaster to regulatory complications, when for instance my project languished in their design review for 6-wks while we underwent utility black outs during fire season and my children took freezing cold showers.
These guys are clowns and one of the biggest time sucks of my adult experience. Use their competitors.

Genevieve was outstanding!!
Genevieve was outstanding to deal with. She helped me and my husband compare her quote with the quotes we got from another company. She gave us her honest opinions and was able to answer our questions about financing options etc. She was very attentive, responsive and friendly. Trevor was our coordinator and he was sure the install went smoothly and was done correctly. Semper Solaris is wonderful and I would recommend them to anyone in the market for solar panels.

Semper Solaris did a great job
Semper Solaris put a solar system on my house 3 years ago and did a fantastic job. The system has been working as promised and literally I run the AC all day during the hot summer months because I got a bunch of extra panels to do so. I’m so glad I went solar with Semper Solaris and have referred them to multiple friends and neighbors and they all had great experiences as well. I’m unsure where these bad reviews come from but Semper is a great company and I appreciate what they did for me.

Excellent!
Excellent! My solar ground mount looks great and although it took awhile to be completed because the County of SD is very slow; we are happy. The crew was gentle when working around my wife’s plants and garden which we very much appreciated. We worked with Rhami during the sales process and he was informative and always available to us which made us feel in good hands. Thank you Rhami! Our scheduler Billie called us to see what days worked best for us and answered our questions. She was very nice on the phone. Pricing, product, customer service and execution were all great. Highly recommend Semper Solaris!

There are MANY great choices for solar installation. Please do your homework and find a reliable and efficient vendor!
Extraordinarily poor communication both within the business and with their customer base. Serious employee turnover as well. As is the case with many others, we were impressed with the Marine motto and expected somehow that this would be the guidepost for the day to day operation. However it is clearly a only a marketing ploy.To make a long story short, we signed on for just two Tesla Powerwall’s in July 2021 and here we are in late February 2023 still not fully functional. When the system did not work they sent out 5 different employees and wasted over 20 hours of my (their) time to try to pair the inverter we had from an older system with the new batteries. Eventually, I suggested putting in a new inverter. They then installed one that was missing a part and kept me waiting about two months for the part to arrive. Finally, I pushed them to simply swap out the bad inverter for a new one. Here we are some 18 months later and they have stopped returning calls and emails since the 1st week in January. I do see that a few people had luck with a solid installation team but overall I sincerely hope that you can easily see that this is a very poor company to trust with your project. I can honestly say that this was the poorest customer care I have ever received.

The Stuff of Nightmares. RUN AWAY
This is a very brief summary of the 10 month long nightmare I experienced with this company They don’t have access to batteries less than 6 months out and will lie about availability to make the sale- They will schedule installation dates with full knowledge they don’t have anything available to install and repeatedly reschedule at the last minute in an attempt to cover for themselves.- They don’t read the notes from failed code inspections, don’t fix the problems multiple times, and lie about what’s wrong.- They don’t know the electrical code in California and will lie about local code having changed to cover for it.- They don’t know the SGIP process or requirements and will get it wrong.- They refuse to provide their legally required contractor’s bond information when repeatedly asked for it.

Had my solar installed with Semper Solaris and I am very pleased with the whole experience. My installer was Robert Cassidy and he was great. He answered all my questions and put everything into laymans terms so that I could understand it all. Highly recommend!

I’ve been debating for a while about whether or not to go solar and finally decided to take the plunge. I did my research and looked around and settled on Semper Solaris. Installer was Mister Robert Cassidy, he had exceptional customer service and was very knowledgeable about the product. You looking for solar I highly recommend Semper!

Crap company
Crap company. Took my Marine Corps motto and turned it into junk by affiliating with this poorly ran company.
The Semper Crap contract deceived me to believe I would have a battery backup with the clause “Manufacturers have indicated that we should have battery supply needed in Q3 2022 or later” in the Equipment to be installed section. Turns out my installation does not include battery back up. I’ll be contacting an attorney for this.
Incompetent and dishonest. Submitted permits request to LADWP without necessary pictures. Project put on hold for over a month. Once solar was powered, LADWP notified meter was not suitable for solar and needs replacement (two more weeks delayed). Wouldn’t solar company know meter needs replacement and request far in advance of LADWP inspection?
Installation was not to plans I approved. Several solar panels were installed facing east at a 21 degree incline when plans called for flat installation. Also facing South was a better option which was clearly possible.

I got my system installed in July 2022. Ever since then I have had nothing but issues. They have came out 7 times since installation and still is not fixed. I would run away from this company as fast as possible. They are not worth the money at all. Just go look at the BBB complaints and you will understand how bad they are.

Every step of the way were mistakes and mishandling of the project, right up until the very end.
FIRST, the turnover of employees is fascinating, literally I was called on the Wednesday before the project was to start by the supervisor, and on Monday was told that he was let go.
I had roof leaks after they finished the roof part, prior to the solar install, dishonest answers to most questions, employee’s working 1 1/2. 2 hour days in the beginning. Changes to the layout of the solar panels and batteries so many times that I could hardly keep track. All the way up to the end when they turned on the system and the batteries weren’t working. They didn’t put the fuses in the fuse box. Fortunately I kept a log of the issues
ONLY hire this com-any if you have the time to be the supervisor and project manager.
Lastly, you won’t find any veterans coming to your house. Everyone from the sales people to the installers and supervisors all said the same thing, They don’t go to the houses, there are only a few veterans in management. Those are direct quotes from employees. I never spoke to a single veteran.

They are the worst possible Company…
They are the worst possible Company. They put our solar and AC in July last year and two weeks later our whole house had water damage from it leaking into our floors. walls and ceiling. All of the owners mangers and employees ignored or never called back and hung up on us when we contacting them. We had to threaten to sue and go to the better businesses bureau for them to contact us. By then we had to take apart our whole kitchen and some of our walls because it was completely damaged and rebuild it. They took no responsibility at all. Our insurance sued them and helped us with most of the repairs. Still to this day we have problems with it leaking and other stuff wrong with it and they keep sending people out to fix it and they never fully fix it. Even asked to have the manager come out but they will not speak to us or come out. If you wanna keep your home how it is and not damage do not spend your money on these horrible people and horrible business. Had to uprooted my whole family for a year living in a construction zone had to have one of my kids live with their grandparents. grandparents. IF YOU GET ANYTHING FROM THIS DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY IF YOU WANT YOUR HOUSE TO STAY INTACT.
