    However, pairing solar with battery storage may not be a great fit for everyone, so it’s worth exploring the pros and cons.

    The Basics of Solar Battery

    All solar systems produce power at different times than homeowners use it. Solar systems will typically overproduce during the middle of the day compared to what the homeowner needs. Without battery storage, this extra production is back-fed to the utility grid through a program called net energy metering.

    By selling their excess power to the grid, homeowners accumulate credit that can be used to offset the power they draw in at night when the solar panels aren’t producing power.

    When a solar system is paired to a battery, homeowners have the option to use their extra electricity to charge up their battery instead of sending it back the grid.

    When net metering is available, it’s not entirely necessary to pair solar with battery storage, however there are benefits to having both.

    The Benefits of Pairing Solar With Battery Storage

    So, why pay for a solar battery when the grid is there to credit you for your excess power anyway? As it turns out, there are several key advantages to pairing your solar system with battery storage.

    Protection Against Power Outages

    For most homeowners, the single biggest benefit of solar batteries is the ability to have backup power during a grid outage, including Planned Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS).

    If you have a solar system without battery storage and you experience a power outage, the solar system will automatically shut off. Electrical code requires that solar systems shut down during power outages so they don’t accidentally backfeed live power to the grid if the utility company has repair workers trying to fix the lines.

    By contrast, with a solar and battery system, an additional device called a backup gateway is also installed that allows the house to “island”, or isolate, itself from the grid.

    The moment the outage occurs, the gateway instantly detects the event, disconnects the home from the grid, and turns on the battery. The system then becomes a closed loop, where the battery powers the home’s backup circuits and the solar panels recharge the battery.

    Time of Use Savings

    Many utilities around the country are moving towards time of use (TOU) rate plans for their residential customers. These rate plans more accurately reflect the changes in wholesale power throughout the day.

    Typically, these plans have peak charges during the late afternoon and early evening, when demand spikes as everyone goes home after the workday and increases their power consumption. The off-peak times are during the middle of the day, when solar systems everywhere are producing excess power, and overnight, when demand is lowest.

    This difference in rates not only affects the cost of power that homeowners draw from the grid, but also the value of the excess power that homeowners backfeed to the grid.

    This means that homeowners on time of use rate plans receive less credit for their extra power generated during the day than they pay for power they draw in during the evening. As a result, homeowners can owe money to the utility company at the end of the month even if their solar system met 100% of their power demand on a net basis.

    This is where the additional savings from solar batteries comes in. Rather than backfeeding excess solar power when it’s less valuable, batteries allow homeowners to store their excess power on-site and feed that power into the house at night, which reduces the amount of power they need to draw from the grid during the highest-cost time of day.

    The amount of additional savings that a solar battery will provide depends on several factors, including how much electricity the homeowner uses, what time of day they use that power, and the structure of their specific rate plan.

    Self Consumption Energy Independence

    Pairing their solar system with a battery also allows homeowners to use far more of their own clean energy.

    Without a battery, homeowners will send a significant percentage of their solar power to the grid during the day, and then draw in dirty grid power at night.

    To be clear, there are environmental impacts from mining and recycling the components of battery storage. However, they far outweigh the disastrous impacts of continued fossil fuel use.

    With a battery, homeowners are able to produce, store, and use their own clean power around the clock. This not only provides the satisfaction of being more self-powered by clean energy, it also enables significantly more energy independence by reducing reliance on the grid.

    Solar and Battery Storage Incentives

    Solar batteries may be eligible for both state and federal incentives, depending on the specifics of the installation.

    The primary incentive currently available for batteries is the federal. which is now at 30% with the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) signed into law.

    That means you can claim 30% of your total solar and/or battery project cost as a tax credit. One of the new changes in the IRA is that battery storage no longer needs to be connected to solar in order to qualify for the tax credit. In other words, standalone battery storage and battery added to existing solar systems qualify for the new tax credit.

    This state program offers an additional rebate for homeowners installing batteries who have particular backup needs. These include being located in Tier 2 and Tier 3 fire areas, needing backup for medical equipment, meeting low-income thresholds, etc.

    There are also Bring Your Own Battery programs, in which utilities provide incentives for purchasing battery and connecting it to the grid.

    Solar batteries store the extra solar energy your panels produce that you don’t immediately use so that you can draw from it later.

    See, solar panels produce the most electricity during the middle of the day, which also happens to be the time when your home uses the least amount of electricity. A standard grid-tied solar system sends that excess solar energy back to the utility grid.

    However, when solar panels are paired with a home battery, excess electricity goes into the battery instead of the grid. Then, when the sun goes down and your panels aren’t producing electricity anymore, you can use the energy you have stored in your battery. instead of paying for electricity from the utility.

    This means you get to power your home with all of the clean, renewable solar power your solar panels produce, no matter what time of day it is.

    How much do solar batteries cost in 2023?

    Depending on the battery’s chemistry, a solar battery can cost anywhere from 200 to over 15,000 to install.

    Most residential grid-tied solar panels are paired with lithium-ion batteries, which cost anywhere from 7,000 to 15,000 to install. Some small-capacity lead-acid batteries can cost as little as 200, but they won’t be able to power much in your home and are typically used as emergency backup power for RVs.

    Factors that determine solar battery cost

    Solar battery manufacturer

    Just like everything else you buy, the brand that you choose will impact the pricing of the battery. This is because different brands offer different services and have different manufacturing processes.

    For instance, German battery manufacturer sonnen offers a luxury line of solar batteries, some of which cost upwards of 30,000. The Tesla Powerwall on the other hand, costs closer to 13,000, including installation costs!

    Battery chemistry

    There are many different types of batteries on the market, but most residential systems use lithium-ion batteries.

    Two main lithium-ion chemistries are used for solar batteries: nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP). NMC batteries, like the LG Chem Prime, have been around a bit longer, making them slightly cheaper than LFP batteries, like the Enphase IQ.

    While some homeowners choose to use lead-acid batteries instead of lithium-ion batteries because they are cheaper, they tend to have a shorter lifespan, lower capacity, and require regular maintenance.

    This seems like a no-brainer, but the more batteries installed, the higher the solar energy storage system costs. The number of solar batteries you’ll need depends on:

    • How many kilowatt-hours of energy you use
    • The storage capacity of the battery
    • How many appliances you want to power
    • How long you want to power your appliances

    In most cases, in the event of a power outage, one to two solar batteries will hold enough stored energy to cover your energy needs and provide backup power to a few key circuits.

    The important things will stay on, like your lights and your fridge, but you’ll need to install multiple batteries to have the amount of energy needed to power something like your air conditioner during an outage or if you’re off-grid.

    Because a battery can’t power your entire home, you might need to install a sub-panel so that the battery will back up only the most important things in your home during a power outage. Installing a sub-panel, sometimes called a backup load panel or a critical load panel, will add 1,000 to 2,000 to the installation costs.

    The amount of labor required to install your battery system will also impact the price of a home solar battery installation.

    If the battery is being installed at the same time as the solar panels, the labor costs could be a bit lower because all of the electrical work and permitting associated with both the solar system and battery system will be completed at once.

    However, if the battery is being added to the solar panel system after the fact, labor could cost more, as new permits will need to be filed, more incentive forms may be required, and some additional electrical work may need to be done to connect the battery to the existing solar panels.

    The cost to install a solar battery can also vary depending on what solar battery incentives are available in your area.

    California’s solar battery incentive program, called SGIP, can cover almost a quarter of the costs of a battery installation. Other states, like Oregon, also offer solar battery programs that help lower upfront costs.

    Plus, if you qualify for the federal solar tax credit, you can get an additional 30% off the cost of your battery installation, even if the battery isn’t connected to solar panels.

    Are solar batteries worth the extra cost?

    Although pairing solar panels with energy storage is becoming more common, it doesn’t mean it’s the right choice for everyone.

    Installing a solar battery storage solution provides the greatest benefits to homeowners who live in areas that experience frequent power outages, where full-retail net metering isn’t offered, or if there are battery incentives available in their area.

    Solar batteries are also great if your main reasons for going solar are environmental, as it maximizes the amount of renewable energy your home uses.

    However, if you’re only looking to save extra money, a solar battery might not be worth it for you. What we mean is, if you live in a state with full-retail net metering, you’ll be saving the same amount of money with a battery as you would without one. All the battery would do is add thousands of dollars to your solar installation and provide you peace of mind in the event of a power outage.

    Installing a solar battery storage system can be a great way to get the most value out of your solar panels.

    Batteries are an excellent source of backup power, they increase your energy independence and, in some cases, can even save you more money on your electric bill because you’ll be drawing power from the battery instead of the grid.

    However, solar battery systems do come at a price. If you’re looking to save money on your electricity bill, installing a solar battery might not be right for you, especially if your utility offers net metering. However, if you live in an area that experiences widespread blackouts, like the ones in California and Texas, or somewhere with Time-of-Use (TOU) utility rates, having a battery backup to store energy for when you need it will be beneficial.

    The upside is that the price of solar battery technology continues to fall, so much so that someday in the near future, solar batteries will come standard with all solar energy systems.

Under these programs, you’re allowed to sell excess solar electricity back to the utility company in exchange for credits. The entire energy grid acts as “virtual” storage for your daytime solar power with this approach. However, most utility providers base their credits on wholesale instead of retail pay rates. As such, the potential savings under net energy metering are limited.

    To reclaim some of these “lost” savings, more solar customers have started turning to on-site battery storage solutions.

    Why Use Batteries to Store Solar Power?

    Although there are many different ways to pair batteries and solar together, most configurations allow you to do some variation of the following:

    • When the sun is shining during the day, your panels feed excess solar power into the batteries.
    • At night (or on overcast days), the stored solar energy in your batteries can be used to power your home or business.

    Note that you only need to purchase electricity from the utility company when your batteries are empty, AND your panels aren’t receiving enough sunshine – either because it is nighttime or too cloudy.

    The beauty of this approach is that you can time when you take electricity from the grid. And this allows you to avoid peak rates, demand charges, and time-of-use (ToU) pricing to generate even more significant savings than you could from relying exclusively on solar PV panels.

    Better still, it’s technically possible to decouple from the grid entirely if your home or business has enough solar and storage capacity. This approach offers true energy independence, with absolutely no more utility bills, rate increases, or tariffs.

    However, increased utility bill savings are only the most recent benefit from the solar battery revolution. This combination has long been used by:

    • Remote properties that are too far from the utility grid. Combining solar and storage is a more attractive alternative to continued reliance on dirty, noisy, and expensive diesel generators.
    • Critical services that need 24/7 power. Medical facilities, military installations, and data centers fall into this broad category.

    There’s also a final group – i.e., those who live in areas with frequent blackouts. Pairing battery storage and solar PV panels provide emergency backup power when the electricity grid goes down. However, this requires using the correct type of inverter since many older inverter technologies are designed to automatically shut down your PV system if there is a grid outage. This “anti-islanding” safety feature is designed to prevent solar electricity from going into the grid as utility workers repair downed power lines in the field.

    If your solar inverter comes with this anti-islanding safety feature, you’ll need to either switch inverters or install batteries if you want reliable daytime power. This strategy is becoming increasingly common in California and Texas – both of which have been plagued by significant grid outages. However, blackouts will likely become more widespread as extreme weather conditions disrupt normal grid operations.

    How to Connect Solar Panels to Battery Storage

    Pairing the on-site batteries with solar PV panels ultimately comes down to connecting the correct wires and components. Many installations require a charge controller to help bridge the gap between the PV panels and batteries. This charge controller is a voltage and current regulator designed to prevent your solar batteries from overcharging.

    However, the actual installation process is rarely this straightforward. That’s because every solar battery manufacturer uses slightly different protocols and specifications – similar to how you can’t use an Android charger with an iPhone. In addition, some manufacturers specify that only licensed service dealers can install their components. Hiring someone outside of the Tesla Powerwall network, for example, could potentially void your warranty.

    It also matters if there is an existing PV system – and whether it was initially designed to accommodate solar batteries at some later date. Storage-ready solar inverters are becoming increasingly standard with newer installs. However, this compatibility isn’t always a given when working with older PV systems. And you may need to explore one of the following options to prepare your solar installation for battery storage.

    • You are adding a second AC-coupled inverter to your existing system. This approach is less popular since there are multiple steps as direct current (DC) electricity gets converted to and from alternating current (AC) power. Because there are transmission losses at each stage, using a second inverter is less efficient in the long run.
    • It is adding a solar inverter that is truly storage ready. This approach delivers higher efficiency rates since there are fewer overall DC/AC conversion steps. However, the setup process is more complex, driving up the total installation cost.

    Which to Choose: DIY vs. Professional Solar Storage Installations?

    Because most solar battery storage solutions are installed at ground level, you don’t need the ladders, harnesses, and other safety gear required when installing traditional rooftop PV panels. However, you’re still working with high-voltage electricity. And this means using specialized safety gear to prevent accidents, injury, or property damage. Installing batteries requires making exact calculations for matching voltages and currents across all the different components in the larger solar PV installation.

    Unless you’re experienced in electrical wiring and circuitry, hiring a professional battery installer is always best. In addition to being a prerequisite for some battery warranties, outsourcing the job to an experienced electrician also delivers better sizing, quality, utility bill savings, and carbon offsets.

    How Much Does It Cost to Install Batteries with Solar Power?

    Combining solar and storage has never been more affordable than it is today:

    • According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), residential, commercial, and utility-scale PV installation fell 64%, 69%, and 82%, respectively – from 2010 to 2020.     That being said, determining how much to budget for your solar and storage installation is difficult since:

    Every PV System Is Unique

    New installations are often cheaper than retrofits since you can do all the electrical wiring at once. It also matters how many PV panels you have (or plan on adding in the future). over, if your current PV system isn’t already “storage-ready,” you’ll need to upgrade it – which costs more.

    Every Battery Is Different

    Every manufacturer uses slightly different chemicals and processes when designing their battery solutions. For example, lead-acid is cheaper than lithium-ion – at least initially.     The first way is pretty simple: Powering your home with solar and battery storage in New York is simply less expensive than buying electricity from a utility.

    That’s a pretty tall claim, so let’s crunch some numbers to back it up.

    Cost of solar and battery versus grid electricity in New York

    Let’s say you are a Con Edison customer and you buy a 5 kW solar system for 25,000 and a 10 kWh battery for 10,000, for a total cost of 35,000. With New York’s solar and battery incentives, you can reduce the cost of that system to around 20,000 for a cash purchase. Here’s how:
