After receiving a quote created from aerial photos, an installation supervisor visited the property to do a physical evaluation. That evaluation identified some issues with the initial quoted system. A couple of alternatives were presented which would have cost more, but the initial quoted price was honoured so we ended up with a better system for the same price. The installation went without a hitch including the removal and disposal of the existing solar panels. The system has been running for over 3 months and the power generated has been good and better than expected on those not so sunny days. Sunrays power installed my solar late in 2019, was a small discrepancie on how many panels as my roof had an unusual section and they couldn’t mont on it so i ended up with 5.something kw instead of the 6kw. System was jinko panels with a Fronious 5kw inverter with wireless login function and tracking. System has been faultless and performed great, was making excess money for me at 1 stage but with the pay in credit cutback not so much now, i can export over 600kw a quarter and only use 100kw grid, solar will run the house from about 10am to 3pm winterish and from 7am to around 8pm in summer before grid power takes over so that in itself is a great saving, in summer it will run my aircon on medium with no grid usage. The total cost of your solar PV system is affected by many factors.
Generally, most people will have their upfront costs influenced by:
- The Government/state incentive obtained.
- Cash vs Finance options.
- Installation costs – including labour costs.
- The solar panel brand, type and number of panels installed.
- Inverter brand, type, size and number of inverters installed.
- The Racking and Frame system and their components.
- Roof height, pitch and the material of the roof.

However, there might be some extra expenses depending on your situation, such as:
- Meter upgrade or reconfigurations.
- Switchboard upgrades.

Depending on the number of appliances you own, your appliance’s energy needs, when you use electricity, your behaviours regarding energy use – will ultimately determine how much you will save.
Without knowing these details and actively changing your behaviours, most households will never save as much as they could be saving.
– Feed-In Tariff
A Feed-In tariff is an amount your electricity retailer will pay you for exporting your green energy into the grid.
Households who are approved for export will be the ones who save the most on their electricity bills, as well as gain the most benefit from having solar panels installed.
It is important to note that some households might not be able to receive a feed-in tariff as there are various requirements or reasons that prohibit a full export of power.
– Where you live

Inverters are the most sophisticated component of your solar PV system. It is also the component that is most likely to break first. Because of this, you want your inverter to have a low failure rate, a long warranty and a well-established presence in Australia.
Just like the panels we sell; we only sell Clean Energy Council approved inverters. It is important to remember that you can get a good inverter despite your price range by making sure that the inverter you purchase is CEC approved.
To secure your system, make sure to choose an inverter brand that has a strong presence in the area that you live in. This is important, as it decreases the shipment time of a new replacement inverter to a few days, rather than having to wait for a month.
Grid connection is one of the most critical steps in your solar journey.
To connect to the grid, you need to ask permission from your electricity distributor. This is because the generated Solar energy’s impacts on the performance of the electricity grid.A ‘Network Connection Agreement’ must be lodged to your distributor prior to installation.
This form is lodged by us on your behalf to your electricity distributor. This form will also dictate if you will be able to export your unused solar power to receive a Feed-In-Tariff.
If you’re not sure who your distributor is, you can check by looking at your power bill or by calling your retailer.
It’s well known that the solar industry is competitive. With many of the bigger players willing to undercut the competition.
We could do that, or, we could be better and offer quality installations, parts and service.
To uphold this point-of-difference, we will not compromise price with quality. We will not sell you the cheapest systems because we will not cut corners by installing the most inexpensive parts and brands.
Additionally, price matching or price beating is difficult in the solar industry because no installation is the same.
For example, price matching or even price beating the same brand of a pen is easy, as they are functionally the same, are made by the same company and no matter who you buy this pen from, the quality is identical.
This can’t be said for solar PV system installations because there is value added all throughout the installation process, as well as extra services, added post-installation.There are also added costs which could crop up depending on your property (such as switchboard upgrades, rewiring cots and shading removal).
A Solar System is an Investment.
We want to do better and protect your investment by providing only the best. We do our research and make sure that the individual parts our installers use to install the system are the best we can get. We don’t price beat, because for us to price beat, we would have to remove the services that would normally come with our installations, or, supply products that don’t meet our quality standards.
We won’t compromise on our point of difference by cutting corners. We want to do what is best – not what is cheapest.
If you believe your system is not working, here are some things you can do to find out:
- Check your inverter – What lights are flashing? What is your output? Try to check it the next day to make sure there is no solar generation.
- Check the solar circuit breaker – Has it tripped? If it has wait until nightfall and to turn it back on. If it trips the next day, then please call us, as this could indicate a potential serious fault.
- Shut your solar pv system down and then restart it.
- If you have a problem that can’t be fixed by doing the above suggestions, please call us and we can come out to check the system (there can be a call out fee if your fault is not based on a warranty claim).
- Find your original paperwork as you might wish to make a warranty claim.

If your number one reason to install solar panels is to save yourself the grief of ever experiencing another blackout, then we want to be frank and tell you, that is a common misconception within the solar industry.
Having solar will not automatically save you from blackouts, as it is a matter of public safety. If you want to use power during a blackout, then you will need to install extra system fail-safes.
To understand why this is needed, we need to get technical.
The flow of power coming from your solar panels changes regularly, according to the amount of sunlight reaching the panels. Inverters convert the DC power from the solar panels into AC power which matches the frequency and voltage of the grid in order to synchronise the phases of the feed into the grid.
Of course, your demand for power changes regularly, as appliances are switched on or off. As the grid can provide much more power than your solar system, it is also the back-up power source which allows the flow of power into a property to be stabilised. Together with the grid, your solar system can create a stable flow of power to meet your needs.Without grid connection (or other specific fail-safes), your solar panel’s electricity production will not be stable, causing harm to you and your appliances.
When a blackout occurs, and the grid can’t stabilise that power, then the same thing would happen if you were not connected to the grid. The supply of power from the solar system into your premises would vary, damaging or causing harm to your equipment, appliances, and even yourself. In order to stop that from happening, the inverter has a failsafe called anti-islanding.
Anti-islanding is an electrical protection measure that is inside anything that generates energy. Anti-islanding protects us, our properties, and maintenance workers from injury by stopping the production of electricity as well as disconnecting the solar unit from the grid.
Without this protection, the solar system will continue to generate electricity – becoming an island, surrounded by a sea of unpowered powerlines, allowing your generated power to travel freely along the gridlines.
Anti-islanding is a safety precaution to protect you, your neighbours, and the utility employees from any live wires that may be touched.

This depends on the system’s components.
Most of our solar panels come with a an extended 25 years performance warranty and depending on the product you buy; our panels may have 10 years or 25 years manufacturing warranty. Sunrays Power have further agreements and licenses to provide additional extended warranties for any REC Panel, or Q Cell Panel system which we install.
For our inverters, we are able to provide a minimum of 5 years warranty on select inverter brands. Additionally, if installed through us, you may be able to register your inverter online (select inverters only) and receive an additional 5 years Parts and Labour warranty on your inverter.
As part of our solar commitments under the Clean Energy Council, we also provide our clients an additional 5 years workmanship warranty on the whole life of the system.

Most insurance companies now consider your solar PV system part of your home, and therefore your solar system will be covered under your current home and contents insurance policy.

How efficient are solar panels?
The median efficiency rating of residential solar panels installed from 2022 to 2021.
According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), most solar panels installed today have efficiency ratings between 19% and 21%. Solar panels with efficiency ratings close to the 22% mark are considered premium efficiency panels and are only offered by a few manufacturers like SunPower and REC Group.
That’s a long way from where we were in 1954 when the first silicon solar panels had efficiency ratings of just 6%. Just ten years ago, solar panels were only about 13.4% efficient! We could see even more improvements in efficiency thanks to exciting new advancements like perovskite solar cells, which have the potential to reach efficiency ratings of 50%!

In 2020, SunPower’s manufacturing branch, Maxeon, spun off as its own company. SunPower’s most efficient panels are still manufactured by Maxeon. But in 2023, Maxeon solar panels are becoming available to installers outside SunPower’s network. The break-up could finally dethrone SunPower as the most efficient panel, but they’re still holding strong for now.
How much do high-efficiency solar panels cost?
You could spend a few thousand dollars extra for premium efficiency solar panels.
High-efficiency solar panels tend to come with a higher price tag and can add a premium of over 2,000 to the total cost of your system. So, a 7 kilowatt (kW) solar system using premium efficiency panels might cost around 23,100, while the same system using regular efficiency panels might be closer to 19,900.
But, the cost of highly efficient solar panels is getting lower, thanks to brands like Trina Solar and LONGi. These Chinese-based companies are making great-quality panels with excellent efficiency ratings for a fraction of the cost of premium brands like SunPower. As these brands develop more products, you could see efficiencies rise while solar panel costs remain the same.
What factors impact solar panel efficiency ratings?
Solar panels are manufactured like a layer cake. There’s the front glass sheet, a layer of encapsulant, the solar cells, more encapsulant, a backsheet, and an aluminum frame holding it all together.

Solar cell type
One of the biggest determinants of solar panel efficiency is the type of solar cell used. Solar cells are the part of the solar panel that turns sunlight into electricity. There are three main types of silicon solar cells:
- Monocrystalline solar cells are the most efficient and the most commonly used solar cells for residential solar panels.
- Polycrystalline solar cells are less efficient, usually with ratings below 17%, and are rarely used for new home rooftop solar installations.
- Thin-film solar cells are the least efficient and typically aren’t used for home solar installations.
Monocrystalline solar panels are the most common type of solar panel used today because they perform better than other cell types. This hasn’t always been the case, though. But, monocrystalline technology continued to improve while getting cheaper, making it the best choice for residential solar installations. The shift to monocrystalline panels is a big reason why average efficiency ratings have increased over the years.
Solar cell construction
As we said, most solar panels today use monocrystalline solar cells. But, there are different ways in which monocrystalline solar cells can be constructed to make them even more efficient. These include:
- PERC solar cells: Also called ‘passivated emitter and rear contact cells’, PERC cells typically provide about 1% in added efficiency thanks to a reflective back layer that reflects back any light that may have passed through the cell.
- HJT solar cells: Heterojunction with intrinsic thin layer cells are just traditional monocrystalline solar cells that have been sandwiched between layers of a different type of silicon that absorbs various wavelengths of light and increases power production. Panasonic and REC Group are known for using HJT solar technology.
- Half-cut or Split cells: Split-cell technology is exactly what it sounds like. solar cells are cut in half with a high-precision laser, which reduces heat and resistance, thereby increasing overall efficiency.
Busbars and wiring
How solar cells are wired together can also impact how efficiently they can generate electricity. If you look at the face of a solar panel, you’ll see a bunch of thin lines. These are a series of copper or aluminum wires that conduct electricity throughout the panel.
Some solar manufacturers have switched to multi-busbar technology, where multiple ultra-thin busbars are used instead of fewer, thicker busbars. The thinner busbars reduce the amount of shading on the solar cell and allow it to absorb more sunlight, thus increasing efficiency.
SunPower and Silfab use interdigitated back contact, or IBC cells, where all busbars and wiring are on the backside of the solar cell. This frees up the entire face of the cell to absorb electricity without shading issues. However, IBC cells are complicated and expensive to manufacture.
If you’ve ever looked at a traditional solar panel, you’ve probably seen the black solar cells surrounded by some white space. That white space is the panel’s backsheet. You may also have seen some all-black solar panels; these panels might have a black backsheet.
Black backing is popular among homeowners because it gives the panels a sleek, uniform look by blending seamlessly with the color of the solar cells. However, panels with black backing are slightly less efficient than those with white backing because it makes the solar panels hotter. Believe it or not, as the surface of a solar panel gets hotter, its efficiency decreases.
Do environmental conditions affect a solar panel’s efficiency?
Everything we’ve talked about so far is specifically talking about a solar panel’s efficiency rating. The efficiency rating is calculated under a standard set of laboratory testing conditions, and unfortunately, solar panels on your roof won’t be getting these ideal settings.
This means how efficiently your panel will actually be will vary, depending on many factors, including:
- Temperature: As the surface of a solar panel gets hotter, its efficiency drops. Solar panels actually operate best in cold but sunny conditions.
- Solar system orientation: In the U.S., solar panels produce electricity most efficiently on roofs facing south. Solar panels facing other directions will get less sunlight, which decreases how efficiently the panel operates.
- Solar system angle: The ideal angle for solar panels is between 30° and 45°, depending on where you live. If your roof has a very steep or shallow pitch, it might decrease the amount of electricity that solar panels can produce.
- Shading: Solar panels work best in direct sunlight. If a solar panel experiences any shading, like the shadow from a tree branch, it won’t produce as much electricity.

How is solar panel efficiency calculated?
When you’re shopping for solar panels, the efficiency rating will be listed on the panel’s datasheet. But how exactly is it calculated? There’s actually a pretty easy formula for calculating solar panel efficiency:
Efficiency = [Power output of panel / (Area of panel x solar irradiance)] x 100
When solar panels are tested in the lab under Standard Test Conditions (STC), it’s assumed they will receive irradiance levels of 1,000 watts of sunlight per square meter. Knowing this, let’s calculate the efficiency rating for a:
350-watt panel with an area of 1.8 square meters:
Efficiency rating = [350 watts / (1.8 m2 x 1,000 watts per m2)] x 100
So, this 350-watt panel has an efficiency rating of 19.4%. Not bad!

LONGi hits 26.81% efficiency for HJT solar cells
Chinese solar panel manufacturer LONGi announced it has reached an efficiency of 26.81% for its HJT silicon solar cells on full-size silicon wafers through mass production. The record was confirmed by the Institute for Solar Energy Research in Hamelin (ISFH).
“Improving the efficiency and reducing the LCOE (levelized cost of energy) is the eternal theme of the development of photovoltaic industry. Solar cell efficiency is the beacon of photovoltaic technology innovation. Every 0.01% improvement in solar cell conversion efficiency requires enormous efforts. In particular, crystalline silicon solar cells account for nearly 95% of the current photovoltaic market, so the ultimate efficiency of crystalline silicon solar cells also shows the development potential and direction of the photovoltaic industry, which is of great significance in the entire photovoltaic industry,” said Li Zhenguo, founder and president of LONGi.
LONGi previously announced a milestone of 25.47% efficiency for these cells in March 2022.
