An Honest Review of the BougeRV Solar Panel [2023]
Solar panels are something we had been looking at installing on our motorhome for a while. We had been hesitant because they seemed a little intimidating, and we didn’t know that much about a solar system or if they were worth the cost. We decided to give the BougeRV solar panel a shot.
After we had researched solar panel kits, we found a lot of information about Renogy, so when BougeRV reached out about giving them a review on their solar panel kit, we were super excited to give them a try. Here is an outline of our experience below, and you might be surprised by what we found.
200 Watt 12 Volt Solar Panel Starter Kit
One of the most affordable solar panels with great output. They are a great option if you’re looking to add solar to your RV or van. If you just need solar panels, these are a great option.

About the BougeRV Solar Panels
BougeRV started sometime around 2007, and they sell an array of different solar power kits and options. As we started to learn more about them, we started to like more and more what they had to offer.
They sell solar panels, solar kits, solar controllers, and all the accessories you would need for your solar setup. They currently sell solar starter kits that range between 400-watt and 100-watt systems and have fantastic customer support.
Getting Our BougeRV Solar Panel
Once we had selected the solar kit, we were interested in the kit being shipped, and arrived very quickly. We often try to purchase items directly from Amazon because of the fast shipping. BougeRV shipped our panels very quickly, and they arrived in great shape.
As we opened the kit, we were very happy with everything, especially the solar cables, mounting brackets, and the hardware that came with the panels.
We compared the BougeRV 200-watt solar kit with the 200-watt Renogy kit, and we were surprised the Renogy kit did not have some of the small things nailed down. The BougeRV kit came with black and red cables, as they should, making it so easy when we installed it to make sure we always had the positive and negative cables in the correct locations.
The Renogy kit we had only came with black wire. This might not seem like a big deal, but when you are on the roof of your motorhome, it is very easy to get confused about which wire you have placed for the negative and which for the positive terminals.
The BougeRV solar controller was great as it has a nice small backlit screen that tells us the charging information and if our batteries are fully charged or not. It also comes with USB ports, so you can charge your phone or use the USB port directly from the charge controller.
The equivalent Renogy controller had no such screen or USB charging options making the information it displayed very limited.
The last thing we noticed is the BougeRV screws and hardware are all stainless steel. This is how they should be because they won’t rust over time. The other Renogy kit screws were not stainless.
BougeRV Solar Panel Sizes
BougeRV has a couple of different solar panel sizes. They have a 100-watt solar panel, a 180-watt solar panel, and a 200-watt solar panel. We found that the 200-watt solar panel was great.
Instead of having two solar panels you needed to connect, we used the one 200-watt solar panel that was all ready to go. This made the solar setup that much easier, and it also makes it easy to add additional panels. We added two more panels for a total of 400 watts.
If you are looking for portable solar panels or flexible solar panels to charge a power station, BougeRV flexible solar panel is another great option. If you look at BougeRV’s website, you will see all the great products they offer, like a portable power station, solar generator, foldable solar panel, and portable refrigeration units.
Benefits of Solar Panels
Solar panels are super beneficial. They keep your RV batteries charged. This is a big deal. We have been without battery power on many occasions or forgot to disconnect the batteries, so when we go to use the motorhome, our batteries our dead.
After installing our BougeRV solar kit, we could see our batteries were not very charged. It was fantastic to see how fast our batteries charged, even in shady conditions. We were super happy to get the BougeRV solar kit installed.

If you know anything about deep-cycle RV batteries, you know that it is important to keep them charged and not to fully discharge them. By installing the BougeRV kit, we will save ourselves a lot of money on RV batteries.
Installing Our BougeRV Solar Panel
Installation of our 200-watt BougeRV solar panel was easier than anticipated. Don’t be intimidated. The BougeRV solar kits are easy to install.
The hardest part we found was finding the studs on our motorhome roof to ensure the solar panel was secure. We added a small piece of angle iron to the panel to ensure everything was secured to the roof.
Here are the steps you will need to take to install your BougeRV solar panel kit.
Installation Steps
Step 1: Determine where you are going to place the solar panel and the solar controller. We placed everything above the batteries because it made running the wire easy.
Step 2: Attach the solar panel to the roof and connect the included solar panel cables.
Step 3: Drill your holes in the roof using a long drill bit. You can drill from the inside or roof of the motorhome. We drilled from the inside to make sure we knew where the wires would go since that is what you will see. After you get your wire through, make sure you use lap sealant to seal any little holes.
Step 4: Drill the needed holes to get the included wires down to your batteries.
Step 5: Mount your BougeRV solar controller to your RV and attach the included wires to your controller. This is the easy step because the controller is easy to see where everything connects. The solar panel connects to the solar panel side of the controller. Then the battery cables connect to the battery side of the controller.
We chose to mount the solar controler on the inside of our motorhome by the driver’s seat. Another common place to mount the controller is in the battery or storage compartment under your RV.
After that, you are all ready to go with charged batteries. We added an inverter to our system so we could charge our computer while off-grid. This is another huge benefit of solar panels. You can use an inverter, and your BougeRV solar kit will keep your batteries charged while off-grid.
Step 6: After everything has been installed, make sure you add lap sealant around all the locations where you drilled. You can also put screws on the roof of your RV. This will make sure you don’t have any leaks and that the roof is sealed properly.
Review: How Our BougeRV Solar Panels Perform
At this point, we have been very happy with the BougeRV solar kit. We would not hesitate to purchase any of their solar panels, solar kits, or other products because of how our experience has gone using the BougeRV solar kit.
We can now do so many things without being hooked into shore power. For instance, we can run our TV and DVD player. We can cook a camping crockpot meal while we are out exploring. We can charge our electronics and use an extra monitor while we are working remotely.
Plus, we don’t have to worry about having enough battery power to keep the lights on after a week of boondocking.
Are the BougeRV Solar Panels Worth Buying?
Yes, the BougeRV solar panels and solar kits are definitely worth buying. They have been a great product for use, and we are excited to use their products in the future. If you are thinking about purchasing solar panels or a solar kit, we would recommend you use BougeRV.

BougeRV 100W CIGS Flexible Solar Panel review
REVIEW – The BougeRV 100W CIGS Flexible Solar Panel is an extremely light, thin and flexible solar panel. Can a solar panel that can be fitted to curved surfaces actually continue to work? Does this very thin, less than a sixteenth of an inch thick solar panel convert sunlight to electricity as advertised? Let’s find out.
Hardware specs
Hardware specs for Solar Panels are not very sexy but are very important and technical. That said they are very important to consider if you are planning to use these panels with another manufacturer’s device as the maximums of either the open circuit voltage, short circuit current, and the maximum wattage, if any exceeded could damage the connected device.
Maximum Power (Pmax) | 100W |
Solar Cells Efficiency | 16% |
Max. Power Voltage (Vmp) | 25V |
Max. Power Current (Imp) | 4.01A |
Open Circuit Voltage (Voc) | 31.5V |
Short Circuit Current (Isc) | 4.32 A |
Max. System Voltage | 1,000 VDC |
Operating Temperature Limits | -40°F – 185°F |
Series Fuse Rating | 10A |
Temperature Coefficient of Pmax | -0.38%/°C |
Temperature Coefficient of Voc | -0.28%/°C |
Temperature Coefficient of Isc | -0.008%/°C |
Dimensions (Width x Length x Thickness) | 13.7” x 78.7” x 0x06” |
Weight | 4.06 lbs |
Each panel is equipped with two, ~3 ft, 12 AWG (gauge) wires terminated with standard IP67 waterproof MC4 connectors, one positive and one negative which either supports the direct connection to a portable power station like the BougeRV Flash 300 portable power station using some kind of adapter, e.g., Anderson Powerpole, DD5521, etc., or the panel can be placed in series or parallel to construct a larger solar panel array of your choosing.
Design and features
The BougeRV 100W CIGS Flexible Solar Panel claims to be 70% lighter and 90% thinner than an average solar panel, however, its main marketing feature is the incredible flexibility, claiming 360 degrees of bendability. That claim is not empty as the solar panel comes rolled onto itself, the photovoltaic cells facing out, in a cylinder the height of which is the width of the panel. The shipped panel was rolled much tighter than is shown in this image. Amazing.
Each panel has a very strong, one-time use adhesive tape to allow the panel to be attached to just about any smooth surface, bending around reasonable curves of any structure. They seem to be marketed for RVs and boats, but really could be attached to just about anything. The adhesive is designed to be able to handle highway speed winds, they could even be placed on the roof of a vehicle whose roofline is long enough to hold the panel. Most minivans and medium-size SUVs have a rooftop that would accommodate one (or two) of these. BougeRV will be offering panels without adhesive soon.
Given how light and flexible the panels are, one can decide to just treat them like a temporary panel. I do not think they are as useful in the temporary mode as typical temporary panels, which fold up, and sometimes have carry handles and stands that allow for more optimal sun positioning and are just easier to handle.
One thing of note is that the panel’s physical size makes them perfect for permanent mounting on a van for people who do the whole van living thing. That said I am not sure how the panels hold up to a standard carwash so you may be stuck hand washing your vehicle once this panel has been attached to your vehicle.
Setup
There are only a couple of things to discuss with respect to setup for solar panels. If the panel is permanently mounted, there is not much one can do to optimize the panel for the perfect sun angle. If the panel is not permanently attached, then it can just be laid either flat on the ground or propped up against something to position them towards the sun for better performance.
Performance
I had another portable 100 watt portable solar panel so I performed two different tests. One test with both panels lying flat, and another test with the panels angled towards the sun’s location.
I will talk about the flat panel test first where one portable power generator is sitting on top of the other one for easy comparison. In the video, you can see the outputs changing in real-time. You will notice that it appears that the typical foldable solar panel does a better job of converting the sun’s energy to electrical energy than the BougeRV 100W CIGS Flexible Solar Panel. I noticed about a 10-20 watt difference between the two panels while lying flat. I could not switch the panels between each solar power generator as the BougeRV panel has an electrical output that could exceed the input voltage threshold of the other solar generator and I of course did not want to damage it. That said, when I plugged the typical folding solar panel into the BougeRV power generator, I still noticed an increase in power coming in, close to what I witnessed when both panels were operating at the same time as in the video.
The next test was to place the panels at a better angle to the sun. Note that this was a different day. I could not get the generators close to each other to get any kind of concurrent picture / video, but again the standard foldable solar panel seems to outperform the BougeRV 100W CIGS Flexible Solar Panel by again about 10 or so Watts as evidenced by the two images below.
I did some research and it appears that the rated efficiency of the two panels is different, with the typical portable folding panel having a higher efficiency than the BougeRV 100W CIGS Flexible Solar Panel. This might explain the slight advantage of the standard glass-based folding solar panel to the very flexible solar panel from BougeRV.
It is worth mentioning that BougeRV also makes a 200W panel, which is about twice as wide as the 100W panel, and the same length.
Final thoughts
Overall, I like the BougeRV 100W CIGS Flexible Solar Panel, but do not feel it is as useful as a temporary panel in the temporary mode as the heavier and less flexible Monocrystalline silicon, or Polysilicon panels are often coupled with other features like, handles, stands, direct USB charging, etc., making them very convenient for grab and go use. However, should you need a permanent attachment solution, and do not want the hassle of heavy mounting brackets, or need to form the panel over and around a smooth curved surface, such as a boat, van, RV, then these panels are the only choice. These panels just feel very durable. They do not suffer from the problems that the standard hard portable panels do as they are not made with glass and can’t really be broken and cracked. There is an amazing YouTube video where a guy drives over the panel with his car on a gravel road no less and they still work. I did not try to duplicate that test. Given the general robustness of the solar panel material of these panels, I can see them becoming common in many different applications. If you have an application where this panel can be permanently attached, I don’t think you will be disappointed by the BougeRV 100W CIGS Flexible Solar Panel.

Good experience on the product. Work well and simple to hook up! Quick delivery. My brother has occasional power outages so he has CPAP needs power. I got him a 200w 9 bb panel,Bluette for Christmas and has 285 watt hours so only lasts 3 1/2 hours. So we upgraded to two 200ah 12v in series 24v. Got one more panel wired in series and 40 A mppt. The solar charges the two batteries and batteries power solar port on bluette, it limited to 200watts input up to 60v and added Victron shut to know details SOC and midpoint deviation of two batteries. Now he has 10 day and can power a few more items. Great products.

Stand behind their product from the build to the delivery. I have kept coming back for many of my solar needs because they have earned my trust. My first experience was based on the Amazon guarantee for purchases. When issues arose as they sometimes do, Bougerv went above and beyond to resolve them. I order through them directly now to enjoy their promos. The service has not changed whatsoever and their approach to taking care of the customer is unmatched online.

Great MPPT Controller
This was a pre-order on a new model, so delivery was delayed as a result. The unit was to replace a 30 Amp PWM controller, which it did quite well. My 300-watt Dokai solar panel now charges my 200 AH deep cycle AGM battery quickly and in cloudy conditions. I keep the controller protected and covered near the battery and monitor via the Bluetooth app on my iPhone which helps with my camp routine of knowing when to put away my solar panels and go off and do other things. Battery does not take long to top off. Big S in satisfied.

Excellent Customer Service
I have purchased a few items from BougeRV, and I am impressed with their communication, service, and problem-solving. There are companies out there that only acknowledge you and assist you when you place an order with them, but when it comes to answering questions after they have your money, good luck getting a hold of them. This has not been the issue with BougeRV as they value their customers! I highly recommend them!

So far so good
Tested a bit. Froze a gallon of water over several hours in the house on MAX using AC power. Kept water frozen for 16 hours on DC power from our Ecoflow river pro power station on ECO mode. Discontinued test when 50% of charge remained. Only concern is the ac outlet is mounted in very flimsy wall of fridge and it flexes greatly when plug is inserted or removed. How long this will last before breaking is worrisome.

My four 120W 12V Mono Solar Panels arrived 3 days after I ordered them. This was much earlier than I expected. One box had a rip in it but the panel was undamaged. I connected the panels in series to my BougeRV MPPT Solar Charge Controller 40 Amp 12V/24V. I got 480 watts under ideal conditions! I was expecting about 400 watts. My 2 BougeRV 12V 100Ah LiFePO4 Batteries connected in series charged from 0 to 100% in one full winter’s day. The solar panels performed much better than I expected. I like the high output for such a small footprint.

BUYER: BEWARE! BUYER: BEWARE!
Purchased a 30 quart Refrigerator / Cooler. Asked for a discount associated with an advertisement and received that. thank you very much. Received what I ordered and the A/C charger does not operate. it’s defective. D/C charger operates the cooler and it really is impressive! Contacted Customer Non-Service in order to arrange for return of their defective brick and getting another one. as well as extending the warante that extra year, especially now that I had an issue right out of the box. Customer Non-service (Dylan) sent a reply right away with the same built-in excuse about how hard their job is, how hard they are trying, how far behind they are, etc. Also gave a standard list of things to check, ie, Is it plugged in?, Confirm that the green light is on, and a few other things that in no way shape or form related to my issue. which is simple, right? They shipped my order with a bad brick. It happens. Asked for a contact number because the number they provide on the unit and on their web site is fake. Refused to send a good phone number. Solution is simple and obvious: MAKE IT RIGHT! Send me another A/C Power Supply.

Dear Bob, thank you for your kind comment. After reading the communication record between you and us, we feel that there is a misunderstanding between each other. First of all, sorry that there is a problem with your power cord, but at the beginning you used the word power supply instead of power cord or AC, so we cannot determine whether it is the power cord or the wiring problem of the refrigerator’s internal control panel or controller. And we explained the power cord at the first point of the troubleshooting steps for you, but you didn’t give a clear answer, so it also slowed down our speed of judging the problem. We’re sorry that we missed your call due to jet lag and busy business. Hope that you could contact us by email, as some issues cannot be resolved over the phone, especially product functionality issues.
